Ranking My Brilliant Moves in 2024!!
Brilliant moves. You know them. You love them. Whenever you see a light blue sign with two exclamation marks, you feel like a grandmaster. Brilliant Moves are one of the top computer moves and involve the sacrifice of material to gain an advantage, change the tide of the game, or deliver checkmate. I will rank all of my ranked Brilliant Moves from #9 to #1 so far this year. Here we go!
#9: 29. Rxe6+!! Versus MorrisRyan (January 4th, 20224)
The reason this sac works is because taking the rook with both the king or pawn leads to the king being hunted down. However, I was completely winning before this move, so even if I had not played this move, I would still win the game. Because of this, I can’t put this move anywhere else except last, because all of the other moves were either the only winning move, or in an equal position.
#18: 6..Nxf2!! Versus cem9721 (January 15th, 2024)
This is the reversed Intercontinetal Balllistic Missile Gambit for Black in a line of the Budapest Gambit. The point of the knight sacrifice is that the knight forks the rook and queen, so the white king has to take, but then 7..Bg3+! Deflects the king away from the defense of the queen, and black wins it after 8. Kxg3 Qxd1. Because it’s unoriginal, it’s number 8.
#7: 16. Nxe6!! Versus stilios300 (January 4th, 2023)
This brilliant move gave me a +0.57 advantage, which is pretty much nothing, but the idea behind Nxe6 is that it deflects the f7 pawn off the defense of the g6 knight and I’ve won a pawn because after either 16..fxe6 17. Qxg6 or 16..Bxe6 17. Bxe6 fxe6 18. Qxg6 wins a pawn. However, because of the small advantage I got from the move. It falls at No.7.
#6: 21. Nf6!! Versus hedi_amara (January 11th 2024)
The idea is that after 21..gxf6 22. Bxf5 is that 23. Rxh6# is unstoppable. What happened in the game was that my opponent played 21..Ne3 and then took my knight after I took his with my rook.. The thing is, that did not work either because after 23. Rh3 24. Rxh6# is unstoppable. But I missed it!!. Because I did not follow up on my tactic, it’s number 6.
#5 20. Rxf7+!! Versus DanLas (January 12th, 2024)
I’m surprised this was the brilliant move in that game, but the point is you take the rook with the knight because of 20..Nxf7 21. Qxf7# is checkmate, if black plays 20..Ke8 21. Rxd7+ wins the queen, and if 20..Kg8 21. E7 and promotion and mate is unstoppable.(Which is what happened in the game) Because Rxf7 is kinda easy to see, it’s Numbero 5.
#4: 10. Nxc7+!! Versus abdouchiha123 (January 19th, 2024)
This is a simple deflection tactic. The tactic is that the knight forks the king and rook, but if 10..Qxc7, 11.exd6 + attacks the queen while delivering a discovered check to the king, winning the queen. I ended up winning the rook and my opponent resigned a few moves later. It is not the craziest tactic, simple, so #4 is a respectable rating.
#3: 24..Rxg5!! Versus samvel4848 (January 10th 20224)
This is a clearance sacrifice of the rook, because of 25.hxg5, 26. Qxg4 is checkmate on the next move, which is what happened. Very pretty, but very simple. It has the edge over #4 because this is an unstoppable checkmate, not just winning a rook. Very nice!!
#2. 18.Nxh7!! Versus rmineo86 (January 2nd, 2024)
What a way to start the year, sacking the knight on h7, threatening to fork the king, rook, and queen, and if 18..Kxh7, 19.Qh4+ Kg8 20. Qh8# is a stunning victory. Very hard to see, and it also is very original, and it destroys the kingside. It is not number 1, because this one is absolutely INSANE!!. I had to rub my eyes and think for minutes to truly understand the move I played.
#1: 13. Nd3+!! Versus rvdw1986 (January 19th, 2024)
This move was so crazy I still can’t believe it. You have no defense to this sacrifice by the knight! If 14. exd3 Bd7+ wins the queen, if 14. Kd1 Nxf2+ wins the rook, and if 14.Kf1, which is what was played, 15. Rc8!, and I win the bishop with a skewer. My opponent sacced his queen for my rook and knight instead, which was incorrect, and I won soon after. So there we go. Tell me if my ratings are right or if I messed up. Thanks!!
