lost rating points after a win

From you game list, it looks like you lost your first game after getting to 1720, that's why your rating when down. Then you won your next two games, with your rating going up each time.

Yeah, you lost a game agains Matteos. You lost more from the loss than you won from the wins because your opponents were all rated lower than you. This site uses the Glicko system, I do believe.
yes i lost a game and went down to 1680 then won a game and went to 1720 then i won another game and lost 60 points and thats the confusing bit, i get i lost points for losing 1 game but my rating was up to 1720 again then wen i won the last game on time forfiet i lost points if u get my meaning

No, look at your game record. Your rating is going up when you win and down when you lose. There is no case where you won and your rating went down.

I saw an answer to the question I now propound but can't find it again. How can I tell if the game I am about to play will be "rated". i.e will change my rating if I win or lose?

For Online Chess, on Open Seeks, you'll see something like this ...
GAME DETAILS | |
Time Control: | 5 days per move |
I Play As: | Black |
win: +13, draw: +5, loss: -3 |
if you VIEW the game (under the ACTION column) if the game is RATED - or some text saying "UNRATED" if it is not.
If the game is already being played, look under the DETAILS tab, then SHOW RATING ADJUSTMENT - where it will show these numbers - or it will say UNRATED.

The problem is that the Action column is ony visible after the game is over so I can't tell before we start to play. Once the game starts I cannot find the details tab. I must be missing something.
I just beat a player who was 144 points above me and got zero points for this. Is there a way to only play in rated games?

Ratings don't rise and fall because of just your games. Other people surged ahead of you, and that is why you are at a lower level. Rating isn't just points - it's more like a position on a map.

MY HOME -> Online Chess -> Open Seeks.
The Action column is available BEFORE you accept the challenge.

Are you talking about turn-based chess - or LiveChess?

No, there doesn't seem to be a setting in Online Chess to protect you from inadvertently accepting unrated games. Even a pop-up: "Are you sure you want to play unrated?" would be useful.

Live chess. What is turn-based chess anyway?
It's the form I was giving all my answers about! Access it by ...PLAY -> Online Chess. It's based on Correspondence Chess; you get days per move, you can pause the game at any time and you can consult books, (most) databases and certain other resources during the game. (See site-playing-rules-a-guide-for-the-perplexed for a comparison).

In LiveChess, YES! Click on SEEK FILTER (at the bottom of the Challenges tab pane). Tick RATED ONLY, and click SAVE.
(Incidentally, there is a small "u" next to unrated games in the TIME column.)

when you are a very high level like 2142, and you win against a friend who 512 in a RATED game, you still lose points. It happened to one of my friend's.
