I  love  chesss  for  very simple reasons. there areno dice to throw. No cards to shuffle  and deal out. No Spinning wheels to flick. No my fellow  chess players, everthing  you need to  succeed or fail in this  wonderful game is all up to you,its all before  you for all the world to see. What say you?

Chess is great for making friends  I like testing my wits and skills against theirs I like seeing their reactions when they fall victim to a sudden devastating attack or mate or when they are lost in a labryinth of possibilities can't find a way out.

Crushed!

Strategy based, and extremely competitive.

To be honest I hate chess. I hate the way it makes me feel stupid when I can't see the tactics trainer solutions, I hate the way I buy chess books I will never "read" let alone study. I hate the pile of chess books in the corner that make me feel guilty because there is a pot plant on top of them. I hate the blunders and the soul destroying moment your brilliant plan falls apart.

I hate the pathetic images I have in my head of one day owning a beautiful wooden chess set on which I will play epic games ,possibly in front of a cosy fire while drinking some fancy port or chess-like drink instead of getting hammered on beer and losing in terrible ways using my plastic pieces.

I hate the fact that I can't stop playing.

Wait...I love chess because I once traveled the world for seven years and I always had a small chess board and I could play chess everywhere and make "friends"

Except from one time in Nicaragua I played chess against a guy on a remote beach near the Costa Rican border and the whole thing ended up in a hostage situation for two months.

I hate chess because you could end up in a hostage situation.

I am sorry I went off topic.

in my first tournament outside my hometown, i was playing the top seed, a real chess genius. a big crowd gathered at the game. i was white and it went 1.e4 c5 2.nf3 nc6 3.Bb5. it ended in a draw and they gave me a standing ovation. so anyway this chess genius was going over the game and said he really liked my Rossolimo attack against the Sicilian. i thought wtf!! you mean it's not a Ruy Lopez ? silently in my head. worse was to follow, a lady stopped me in the street to tell me she saw my photo in the newspaper in the chess column. then I played in the national senior championship, my rating was well below the minimum required to enter but they threw me a wildcard. i finished just 1.5 points off the joint winners and had a brilliancy published in the tournament booklet. If only none of this had happened! I could be free of this awful game.

Great Scot! I once beat a guy at a tournament when I was 12 , he was supposed to be real good. No one applauded but a guy that was a coach came over to me and said " well done"

That was the golden moment in my chess career I have been trying to replicate ever since ....only after your story it seems a bit less golden and shiny.

Thanks for liberating me Miaow

I love chess for the combinations of mentally-challenging puzzles in the form of a game.

And possibly because of all the black and white that reminds you of the piano.

Is chess perhaps less like life and more like a piano?

Dubious-Duck

Damn, someone got sincere with their thoughts. The first half of the post at least.

When one  shares their humanity with others is quite unique, and risky, especially in these forums. I believe  that  at whatever level of success one  may achieve at this  game  , its  still a struggle, frought with frustration, humiliation, and  self doubt. This  is  the common thread that binds us all as Chess Players. We are  not enemies but, colleagues in this eternal struggle to find our way to Chess Nirvana. Hope  to see you there someday!
