!Recommendations on certain Chess Software

Hi,

I would like to find a specific chess software that allows you to locate, move and arrange the chess pieces freely. I have installed BabasChess and it was too complicated for my liking. Besides, the chess board doesn't show any numerals and alphabets on the side - I need one that actually has those things.

I like jrobichess' chess interface but sadly I couldn't figure out what software(s) he uses.

Help please. :(

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong place.

scid is the best chess database freeware.  You can even use it to play on fics.

Or you could try winboard.

It looks like jrobichess is using the ICC gui dasher.

If you just want to add coordinates to babaschess, the option is under preferences> board> board window.

scid is pretty awesome.

Note that the Ed Collins link for WinBoard is more than 10 years old...

Considering the rate at which WinBoard is developed, that could be considered pre-historic. More up-to-date stuff about WinBoard can be found at http://hgm.nubati.net/news.4.6.0.html or http://hgm.nubati.net .

To move the pieces freely, don't forget to set it to Edit Game mode, or to start up as game viewer (without engine), where this is automatic. With engine you could set it to Analysis mode as well; then you can freely move the pieces while the engine is constantly reporting its opinion on the positions you create that way.

To really move the pieces freely (i.e. ignoring the rules), you can switch off legality testing. Board coordinates can be switched on or off in the General Options menu.
