Refusing to Resign

Maybe he assumes that if you couldn't get mate with 3 Queens, you would have a harder time with 4?  And ya, I agree that he's at least trying for stalemate and waiting for you to slip.  And what reason can you give for not checkmating way earlier with 2 or 3 Queens anyway?  If you are concerned with the time it takes to win the game you ought to be going for a faster checkmate.  Besides, it is ALWAYS bad form to ask/suggest/demand/WHINE someone to resign.  In a face-to-face tournament, I believe it is a punishable insult.  If I am wrong about that part someone let me know so I can delete it.

Oh dear. I think this site needs a feature that causes a loud buzzer to sound whenever sarcasm or satire is expressed in a post. Perhaps then people will get it.

I think this is so funny, and I have had people ask me to resign and then end in a draw where I cannot move without going into check and you actually get points, maybe 20+, I'm not sure, so I just ignore them unless I get bored with the ending from now on.  I have seen so many really high rated players that never get checkmated even when doing badly because they either resign just before the checkmate or let the time clock run out.  I think it might be used as a psychological tool, asking someone to resign, to keep from having any accidentals, like them letting the time clock run out and not getting the checkmate, God forbid.  I have actually had people take 16 more moves to get a checkmate...and with a large amount of material, so it seems much easier just to get someone to resign than to actually have to work for it.  I like the end game whether I'm winning or losing.  It is just another challenge to learn from.  In the tactics lessons at chess.com they actually have a checkmate pratice with very few pieces on the board.  Most high rated players would have resigned long before this scenario would have ever developed.  I think the tactics lessons are very helpful since I find myself grubbing it out to the end a lot.  I just don't like to resign unless I am really bored.  Whoever is playing me will just have to be patient while I am learning.

I think it would have taken me a few more than 16 moves, but I could have probably gotten it done, or at LEAST pulled a draw out of it.

nice post. :)

That's funny, I've heard it's unsportsmanlike to resign and not giving the opponent the chance to checkmate your king as a consolation to an attack well done, heard it's unsportsmanlike to have 4 queens, likewise unsportsmanlike to drag the game on when someone knows they will win just for the sake of toying with the guy, the list goes on...

The point I'm trying to make is the entire point is moot. One would hope people have the same set of ethics, but do I have to congratulate some guy that dragged out a game that should have been over, got 4 queens to spite me, told me to resign because I had lost? I'd find that more offensive than he didn't congratulate you.

Resignation isn't unsportsmanlike. It's an acknowledgement that your opponent played the better game, and it happens in grandmaster play all the time.

The prosecution rests, different people see it differently based on your perception of ethics among other things. Which is what is wrong with this thread to start with. I actually had someone mad at me because I did resign, so is his thoughts on it anymore wrong then the next person? May be against the norm, but just goes to show that each person has there own definition of sportsmanship and while we hope they all jive, sometimes they just don't.

By the way, yes, I said it to make a point and doesn't mean thats not my personal opinion of it and quite aware of the uses of resigning thank you.

wiediesana - I have tried to have this addressed by the authorities and they are letting the "Partner" slide. See my previous post.  I wish to add to my list of grieviences that the "Partner" does indeed "mess around" as well.

Also, a little off-topic but appropriate:

This resigning post gets to the heart of the matter more than the other one circulating around here.

omg, i was about to bash the original poster of this thread because it took him an additional 16 moves to check mate his opponent. but then i realised it was a joke (after he said his opponent was Little Chess Partner). Nice spoof!

Dear Mr Crashes

At first I thought that your post was a fine example of satirical humo(u)r and my earlier response was made in the same vein.  A number of other people have commented in the same manner.  However I note that the majority of respondents have failed to 'see' the joke and that in many cases you have been flamed.  This is despite repeated claims that your post is humourous. I am left with two choices.

1.  I am right but I am in the minority.  The greater number of correspondents must therefore either be miserable or befuddled.  This means that I am more intelligent than most.  Since chess is the thinking persons game I must be very clever.

1. I am wrong.  This means that I am not very clever and you are not funny.

Now I am also humble (its my one fault) so I must also be wrong.  This means that you are not funny.  A plaque of boils upon you sir for upsetting so many forum members.  May your bishop drop off and your chessboard get woodworm.

By the way, have you heard the one about 'the ostrich, an actress and Erik'?  It's either hilarious or true!

You forgot about the apathetic/selfish/immature, who, inspite of the best writing, or best humor, have an agenda/issue/cross to bear and could care less anything else but themselves. So you might be correct and they don't care.

Resigning takes maturity and dignity and some people just never really get it.It is a sore subject with them as they couldn't recognize a losing (or winning) position if it bit them on the big toe.

So, in spite of the most logical and humorous post I have read in this form, ever, you are still wrong. Tongue out

lol yeah.. It's really funny to see all these people whining about the other person not resigning, when what they're really whining about is their own inability to learn how to checkmate.

I hope it wasn't sixteen moves from that position. There is definitley mate in one. Qg7#. It is very unsportsmanlike to ask for them to resign.
Avatar of Checkers4Me

so, is little chess partner getting banned or what?

If not, I hope I don't meet IT in a chess tournament. IT would drive me crazy by not resigning.

Avatar of Rabid_Dog
I'm with you Checkers4me.  Not only is it obvious that LittleChessPartner is using some sort of computer but 'he' also appears to be a member of the Chess.com team.   Erik is curiously silent on this matter.  Have you ever seen the two of them together in the same place...?
