I don't get it.  You can just resign the game, right?  This isn't really an option when the losing side decides to stall, but I've never heard anyone complain about the winning side stalling.

ClavierCavalier

Yes, it seems strange since resigning is always an option.

The worst thing is when they blunder the game away early and they decided to wait 20 minutes.

Is anybody else tired of people not rematching after one victory, especially after they play white or a time victory? My brother tells me that at levels 1400 and on people usually be fair and rematch but at the lower level I'm currently at, it seems nobody ever rematches after close victories, or maybe I'm crazy.

Once again, BLOCK anyone who refuses a rematch after 1 game!!! Eventually they will only have each other to play.

Read my profile description and understand why some people do not want a rematch.

Here, you are playing chess over the internet. There is no such things as honor, shame, politeness or whatever. Play your game and move on.

ThrillerFan

I see no reason to be obligated to give a rematch.  First off, ICC is far better than this site for playing chess online, so if I'm going to be playing for a long while, I'll log on there.

Much more typical when I'm playing a game here is that I might be on my last 10 minutes of my lunch break, and I go ahead and play a game, maybe 2 tops.  I go in, put in for a 5-minute game, and feel in no way obligated to play multiple games.  Nothing unethical about it.  I may have been White.  I may have been Black.  I may have faced a player 200 rating points above me, or 50 below me.  I may have creamed him, or I may have won a long pawn-up ending.  It doesn't matter.  I'm there to play for 10 or 15 minutes and that's it!  So going around saying that it's unethical or mean spirited to not offer a rematch is a bunch of horsesh*t!

fischerandchips

If I lose a close game, I will almost always offer a rematch. Even if I get beat pretty badly, I like to play higher rated players so that I can get better. If I win, I won't offer a rematch but I'll accept if they offer

Ziryab

after a loss, it's not an offer, but a request.

I might catch hell for this, but people who refuse rematches are insecure about their abilities.

Maybe if they barely scrape by and end up winning by the other player getting overconfident and dropping a rook in a R+R vs R game, and then go off to play a weaker opponent.  There are many valid arguments about why someone won't accept a rematch, such as not having the time to do so.

Just because you've been rematching against the Bat for 60+ years now doesn't mean we all have times to do rematches.  :-p

Haha good one!

Lets see if i win, a rematch is in order because i should be "fair". If i lose i should get a rematch as it's only "fair". If we split games another game is in order to find a winner. What is this, politics ? It's a game folks...in my apt. b.s. is going on constantly---nurses,cleaning woman,a dog that needs walking 4 times a day, phone jumping off the hook, cooking for 2 of us, going for chemo, visiting my 3 kids and 5 grandchildren and i'm supposed to be caught up in chess games because of someone wants ? Oh sure,u can count on me( don't hold your breathe) !

Being checkmated is annoying. If your one move from mate---try resigning. u save 5 min.s

Last night I reached a decisive advantage with Black on move 20, and checkmated my opponent with two queens on move 31. He left a message containing profanity on my page because I did not play a second game.

A rematch is not always merited. If he had resigned in a hopelessly lost position, I would have been happy to play another game or two even though it was way past my bedtime and I had poured that third glass of bourbon while watching Criminal Minds. I went to sleep instead.

sorry the chances of winning as white with a standard opening is at worst 40% and the chances of tieing is 25% i confused myself on that one

Those statistics only apply at the master level.

@Ziryab Sounds like you and I would get along very well. What kind of bourbon? Right now I just opened Templeton Rye, which is quite interesting. My first rye - a bit on the sweet side. But interesting.

Last night, I was drinking Wild Turkey Rare Breed. I was consoling myself that I will be running a youth chess tournament this Saturday when I need to be at Dry Fly Distllery for the release of their second batch of bourbon--the first bourbon made in Washington state was batch one (my bottle remains unopened in my wine cellar). Batch one sold out in 45 minutes.

I don't usually rematch cos I spend a few mins looking over game after even quick games to get a feel for what just happened and any lessons need to be learnt
