You only encourage your opponent to hang on in the hopes that you'll mess up and stalemate him when you do this.
Resignation Knightmare

Awesome! Here's 2 more awesome games in the same style by Hikaru Nakamura, everyone's american chess hero.
The best part is these games are against COMPUTERS! One is against Rybka, the strongest chess engine, and the other is against Crafty. It's all the sweeter when a human humiliates a computer like this! And keep in mind these games are speed ! I have no idea how anyone could play over 200 moves in a 3 0 game and mate like he did, really, Nakamura is the man!

in that game as i can see The king starts moving only on move 33! The king is checkmated 51 moves later! is this not a draw under the 50 consecutive king moves?

the 50 move rule is when there isn't any captures or pawn moves in 50 moves. In all of the games, there is either a capture or a pawn move in the 50 moves prior to checkmate

yeh nice... but not for opponent... perhaps more annoying when people dont checkmate as opposed to resigning, as at least if they wont resign you can force a finish... where as your opponent just had to wait and hope for the best. once i saw the h-column pawn advancing thou i would have resigned for sure... guess it is the consequence of goin for a stalemate thou
definately proved ur point - rematch and try do it again

That was poor sportsmanship on your part not your opponent's. He has every right to play out a losing position and judging from the play, he could have used the opportunity to see efficient play. Toying with someone is petty, and it should only be done if they insulted you (or acted like a jerk, as with your other knight's post) or you're 10.
I had respect for you for showing an arrogant, and obnoxious player what he earned in your other post (here, the annotations are good), but to do this to a lesser rated opponent who did nothing but try to hold on is pathetic, and should be beneath you

oh lighten up jenkinsa. the opponent could have resigned if they wanted to, both players had every right to do what they did.

Next time make your opponent's king go to every square on the board, otherwise don't bother posting.
I can't believe I wasted time going through that. I'll never get those 3 minutes of my life back.

Texaspete you lost either way. Either your opponent was simply a rank beginner wanting to play the game out to the end no matter what the conclusion, making you look like an unsportsman-like jerk... Or he was truly trying to piss you off by dragging out the clearly lost game and succeeded by getting a reaction from you.
That said, I've been known to do this many times (the 8 knight or other delayed checkmates) although mostly only in bullet. It's all about the chess ego. The real issue here is that you couldn't stand the disrespect your opponent was (possibly) displaying towards you by not conceding the game and admitting defeat. It's as if he was saying that YOU are not good enough to admit defeat to. Or YOU are not good enough to cash your multiple advantages into a win. It's all about the chess ego, and a huge percentage of competitive players succomb to it so you are not alone. I've lost count how many Grand Masters I've seen use this 8 knight or other delayed mating tactics on ICC so you are certainly in good company.
A regular forum topic here is about how annoying it is if people don't resign in lost positions.
Try and enjoy it more. It must have been quite a knightmare playing the white pieces in this game
