I have to admit that I think that, were the pieces intelligent, the rooks are the muscle. They're the big, strong guy's who carry 100 weapons into battle. It's like having Rambo and the Terminator on your flanks.
Also, how is "Awesome" wrong? Maybe they truely inspire awe in the OP? We all know Brits don't know English... Coulor? Theatre? What?
