I miss the afternoons in the early 70's when I could wander into a small chess studio in the village in NYC and sit down and play chess with an International Grandmaster for the pricey sum of fifty cents an hour. At that time, there were only seventeen men in the world alive that were holding that rank. There was a huge photo of Rossolimo and Fisher on the wall. Fisher's arm was affectionately wrapped around Nick's shoulders. A nice quite little studio with a lot of great memories. I did have one thing in common with this chess legend, we both also drove cabs.

Lots more GMs than 17 in the early 70s.

Yes, We often played chess when we weren't ducking incoming from North Vietnamese heavy artillery being fired across the DMZ from over fifteen miles away. There were little shops set up right outside the gate where you could get a haircut, buy rubber tired sandals, or small hand carved chess sets. A book I wrote about those days won honorable mention at the New York Book Festival in 2007. You can google my name, Robert McLane to find a copy. Being Marines, we also played poker and shot dice, when we weren't shooting back. Perhaps there were more than seventeen, that was my impression. I was quite happy to pay my fifty cents and play.
