rule question

Was curious about the rule regarding check. Was playing in a tournament yesterday and was about to mate the guy, he took a pawn and put me in check. I was so focused on the mate that I didn't even bother to look at the board. So I made an illegal move. I moved my queen but luckily I could block check with it so I had to move the queen.  What would have happened if I couldn't block check with the queen? He lost every game and was getting his butt kicked this game so it was his desperate attempt for some kind of advantage.

You would have to address the fact you were in check first.

Yes, if you touch a piece and can't make a legal move you have to make a legal move. in this case you must get out of check.

If you're in check and you touch some piece intending to deliver mate and the piece touched can take the checking piece or block it, it has to take it or block it.

Ok thanks for the responses. I was mainly just wondering if there was some kind of rule saying that if you touch a piece when you're in check and you can't block with that same piece you lose.  I think thats what he was trying to aim for since he actually took my king.  Didn't seem like he knew the rules either.  He was just delaying the inevitable.

In a blitz tournament you can sometimes take the king to win.

In a regular tournament if you touch a piece that has no legal move, then nothing happens. You're free to make any legal move.

In a regular tournament if you make an illegal move, then the position is reset to after the last legal move was played and often you're penalized by having time taken away from you, or even added to your opponent's clock. After repeated illegal moves you may forfeit the game.

The king is never captured for any reason in a standard game of chess.
