I dont get why you would spen hours organising and planning this event, then when things get a little late you declare the other team forfiet-wins that have no meaning anywhere, anytime, by the way, they dont even exist except in your head. It was all a complete waste of time

Avatar of aebalc

You followed the rules and got your win but the match isn't about winning - it's about competing .  You don't feel good about the way you won and I can't help you with that.

Using the rules are rules line you are trying to deflect the fact that you cowardly took the win instead of earning it.  The rules didn't make you claim the win they only allowed you to.  Deep down you know this and feel sullied by your actions.

Harsh, but it has to be done.

Later, the OP finds out the opposing team was late because they'd been held hostage by a group of armed extremists and their first string bus driver was shot and killed as the police SWAT team swarmed the bus in a haze of tear gas and flash bangs.

That win still feel good?

the possibilility for that happening in denmark : 0,01%

actually they said they were late because their tomtom gps told them to drive to another town with the same streetname as the destination they should have gone to.

I would have taken the match point, but play the games anyway. They could still be rated!

that would not be possible in the tournament system.

if we played rated the match point wouldn't be sure.

Well, you have probably ensured that your team will never, ever, be granted even the slightest break of any sort by any other team in the future.  But I'm sure you'll like that, since the rules will be followed.

Since your team members seem to get more enjoyment out of enforcing the rules than playing a few games, perhaps you guys should consider another hobby instead of chess.  Maybe your club could volunteer to enforce parking regulations or something.

the team that did not show up was met by even harder consequense since not 3 out of 4 showed up within 30 minutes they lost all their games and are forced to end last in the group. with being send down from A to b group afterwards.

Not my rules but team rules in the league. The team was 2. place before the match.

I think he mentioned on the first page that the other team wanted to play the match, and got a bit testy when they were refused, threatening to crush the opponents in future matches.

To restore a collegial atmosphere and avoid lingering, festering animosities, the proper course was for the late team to offer to buy a couple rounds of beer.  You can't stay mad at people who are buying you beers.  At least, as long as they keep buying.

+ 1.

A friendly, we're sorry + several rounds of beer can solve it.

A much better outcome, regardless of the result. And you will have some new friends for sure. Cool

Hard consequences. Cry

Anyhow, you won by following rules strictly, that's perfectly fine, but somehow, I don't think you're proud of it.

P.S. I can't believe no one called and informed you that they were late, or you neglected to mention it?

I dont know what the all circumstances are.

But I do know, in our local, league, the home team starts the clocks precisely on time. Everybody knows this, nobody complains. It's strange how teams from 60km's away, travelling through heavy traffic makes it on time, and the guys from just down the road are always late......

And anyway, a bid of bad blood between club sides is a good thing....

Sure, especially if they're not going to bother playing the chess games.  Ya gotta face off about something, after all . . .

Again, all this needless acrimony, when there are literally barrels of beer getting lonely.

Bring a little peace to the valley with glasses of beer.  While you're up, some pretzels or chips would be nice, too.

I prefer hot wings !!

what? wow, i'm glad i don't play chess in denmark. what happens if they catch you cheating? my guess is death penalty.

Rules are rules , I agree.  However, sometimes the rules suck and should be changed !  The fact that they arent is why I have quit playing team chess and will not play any longer for a team here in Portugal.  The rule that has caused me to quit is that in a team event at least half of the team ( 2 players here as the teams are 4 players ) must be present before any player is allowed to play their game !  What this has resulted in is that I have often been the only team member who shows up on time for the scheduled start of the game on time but am NOT allowed to make any moves on my board and am forced to sit watching as my time ticks away until at least one of my teammates arrive to play also !  I dont know why I should also be punished in this way for the tardiness of my teammates but have had this happen too frequently to endure any longer so I bid farewell to team events.

Breaking the rules in chess is NOT fair play.I definitely would be discouraged from playing against a player who was inclined to break the rules.

That's just sad. And I think you know this as well, because you posted this.

There might be good reasons why they showed up late etc. Rules are rules yes, but sportsmanship is the basis of everything. If it was your best friend, would you have taken the win?

Is winning that important to you? I mean it doesn't sound like a great and honorable way to win. Nothing to be proud of.

I would be lying if I said winning isn't important to me. secretly even though I am not proud I make a victory dance our team won 4-0.

I am kind of surprised to learn how noble sportsman you all are in the forum

I think I am still a sportsman even though I chose not to play.

the solution is to change the rules that both team lose if they decide to play on.

eliminate the human factor same for everybody.

criminal persons convinced the law that death penalty should be abolished for all crime in 1978 in denmark and in 1998 in Canada.

I guess the only thing happening to people cheating is that they will told not to do it and hopefully excluded from all chess forever.

It depends on the match. If it was really a professional match, national level or higher, you want to take the win. For a club match, claiming a win because the other party got lost is pretty pretty sad. We would never do that. If they really got lost, we would simply share the time loss and take 15 mins off each, or we might postpone the game and play with full time anyway. If the opponent is late but gives no reason, we might start the clock. In official matches games would always have to be started on time. I think you also need to be on time now, but few people care. In other words, if there are no officials present, you can pretty much do what you want. It is a bad plan to tick off other teams. You have to meet them for many years to come anyway.
