Some tournaments have rating requirements, so people will lower their rating.
And in general this sort of "big fish in a little pond" type of thinking. "I'm the best 1000-1200 player here!"
I guess I can't speak for everyone, but that's why I'll sometimes go to unrated site and open with scholar's mate, just so they (probably) underestimate me, then if I win it's dramatic :p
isn't that underestimating oneself though ? somehow, sandbagging is totally contradictory, at least to me it seems so
Or else, there is some technical idea, some manipulation, behind it which I' don't understand the goal of.
Well... I just explained some tournaments wont let you in unless you lose game on purpose and lower your rating...
yes, that can be done, on a small scale.
That member I gave the link to resigned more than a hundred games...he had plenty of tourneys going...didn't need to lower his rating to participate in some...
And some people like mismatches where they're the big favorite to win.

sandbagging online, yes. I can see the point in real life...
To lose a few hundred points you'd have to resign a bunch. 100 does seem like a lot though.
He went down from a rating of more than 2000 to 900...
Can some of you explain what the purpose of "sandbagging" is - i.e. manipulating your rating ?
I have heard
1/ cheaters need to lose to cover up their cheating.
2/ Helping friends (helping friends ?!?)
3/ starting from scratch for the fun of it, and rising fast (glicko unbalances)
Please enlighten me ?
