I know what you mean, but some people just want to play and not chat. I wouldn't take it personal if they don't say hi back
Saying Hi to your opponent.
I don't have personal experience with this since I don't have a smart phone, but in another thread a player explained that on mobile devices, the dialogue box is either so small as to be unreadable or sometimes not visible at all. So sometimes if your opponent is using a mobile device he may not even be aware of your greeting.
Are you looking at me ? I said ...are you looooking at me ? Because if your looking at me, you could at least say hi....
My games (CC) are almost all tournaments and team matches, and so always white/black duos against people who are new to me. I always send a thorough greeting with my first move in our first game. The response rate runs less than 50%, though recently it's been a little better, just about right at the 50% mark. In my ongoing tournaments I've had a total of 33 new opponents and I received 16 responses to my initial greeting.
I always say hi if somebody else does first, but I sometimes don't notice that there was anything in the chat window, as I have it set to show the Moves tab by default.
I'm usually on several sites playing chess at once so I'll have three different games or so in different windows and sometimes I don't even realize that there is text in the box 'cause I'm flipping back and forth.
If I notice the text, I usually apologize for my delay in giving a reply and most opponents are good sportsmen and sports ladies that they understand and it's all good then.
So don't get mad if you don't get a response ... perhaps the person is unaware that there is text. That's always a possibility but probably not a likely one, but you never know.
I hope that helps.
Peace

Why is it that some miserable sods never say hello.
