Saying "gg"

Sort:
Chess4001

It's been probably a year since I played an OTB game and my old habits saying "good luck" and "good game" are dying away. I almost never type gl or gg when playing nowadays, but now I'm wondering if I should start doing so to show respect.

I guess it's nice when someone says gg, but it really doesn't matter much to me. I don't know if you should say gl. Chess is not a game of luck.

I always appreciate little gestures of courtesy at any point in the game. Even a little "Hi" at some point counts in my book.

After all, we can't shake hands, right?

Never thought about it lol. ~Good Game.

When someone says gg after beating me in a one minute game, I block them. It is clear that their standards are too far below any rational sense of the true art of chess.

I never use gg or even the longer term 'good game', simply because people can interpret it in different ways. If, in my opinion, the game really was a goos one, then I might write 'interesting game' or 'excellent game', etc. because I feel it helps make it clear that it is not just something I'm saying mechanically.

At the same time, I don't say it at the end of every game, and I'm not insulted if my opponent doesn't say it or doesn't reply to me.

I think it's nice to say "good game", before the first move. After the game is over, I usually say "hi".

Ziryab

I like it when a player survives the onslaught and runs me out of time one move before getting checkmated to earn a draw, and then says "pwned!"

This happened today.

Usually I say "Good games." after a long series 40 1|0 games, even though they all were crap.

A civilization has to have rules, and good sportsmanship is among those rules. It's designed to prevent us from killing each other at the end of competitive events. I'm talking about civilization here, people!

I don't think Americans have any right to talk about "civilization".

That's because of poor sportsmanship! It's all inter - related.

If you win, you do not say 'good game' you say 'thanks for the game' or something like that.

If you lose you can say good game..or thanks for the game..

But think about it, if you beat your opponent..obviously they didn't play a good game...so why would you say it? It is an insult.

The person who loses can play a good game, just not good enough to beat a particular opponent on a particular day.

rotcivairotciv

A simply hi...or hello is much enough for me.

So when you beat someone, it's okay to say, "gg against a lower ranked opponent"Laughing

brockenzamier

I only say GG when I lose.
