Saying "gg"

Well, I wouldn't add the "against a lower ranked opponent" part. Don't you think it's possible to play well and lose? The result is a 1 or a 0, but the play is more nuanced. If winning is the only critera used for a "good game," then we should never say it. Humans can no longer beat computers, so we all suck!

waffllemaster

When playing a long series I'll sometimes say "last" for the last game and "thanks" after the last game is over.

If nothing is said doesn't both me.  Actually prefer silence if it's just a one off random opponent.

Courtesy costs nothing and creates goodwill.  I think that the ubiquitous "gg" should be taken for what it is: common courtesy.  I always appreciate it.

Bubatz

Those acronyms always give me headaches ...

gg= "good girl!"

gg= "good grief!"

gg= "gotta go!"

gg= *giggles*

gg=*great guffaw*

chesshole

i only say gg after my opponent blunders and i capture his queen for instance.  i believe that is the only polite way to say gg

I suppose the question is "to g or not to g?".

There is an art to finding the right gg spot.

I think it's nice to say "good game", before the first move. After the game is over, I usually say "hi".

Like in Zabriskie Point?

Ooooh, I got excited to see one of my favorite over-done topics that never ever goes away!

If you win because the opponent made a large blunder, I wouldn't say gg. Your opponent most likely didn't find the game good and will take offence at the gesture.

i think you don't have to say gg but if they lost by a bunch of blunders then i wouldn't say anything

defajo

at tourneys, both my opponent and i (here in south dakota) will say hello, chat before game, and goodluck once the game starts, we after the game say gg, comment about the game maybe, and usually become friends no matter the turnout :) after then the entire section usually becomes all buddies so we always are able to cheer on and give goodlucks to everybody before games. its really nice :)

but at chess club we dont even bother...cuz we all kno each other and are joking around and its all juz for fun anyways :)

beardogjones

"gg" means "giggling gloatingly"

oriordan

I don't think Americans have any right to talk about "civilization".

 In another thread trysts posted "America is overrated." I'm sure the families of our volunteer army killed in action would love to read some of these posts.
