SCID vs PC

Red "D" is an information for pgn processing software to put a diagram after that move. Useful if you want to convert a pgn to pdf

When analysing a position, scidvspc sometimes gives 2 scores, for example:

Is the first score the actual score and the second the score after the variation? Or is it the other way around?

Also, when analysing a game there seems to be some "D"'s (in red). What does that mean?

Yes, first score is actual score. This is more intuitive than mainline Scid, which has the var score first.

'D' means diagram, and is used when exporting to latex (for eg).

There ist not enough place on desktop for Scidvspc, but with Scid its working perfect.

Right click on the main boards tab and hide the statusbar/buttonbar etc to make more room.

BTW, Scid vs. PC 4.11 is out http://scidvspc.sf.net

I tried to fix the Screenshot bug, but couldn't get it. Foot in Mouth

Hopefully for next time

I just started using Scid vs. PC. Huge improvement over old Scid, I must say.

Keep up the good work! I'll be recording some of my experiences on my blog probably (which I keep mainly as notes-to-self). cortman.wordpress.com

Does anyone know how to improve the graphics, especially the pieces? I have a 1920x1080 screen and every piece set looks terrible. Very pixelated and rough.

Hi Steve, thanks for the new version!

I did have a glitch when I tried to install the 64-bit version onto my Windows 7 x64 PC. During installation, the installer prompted me to install to "C:\Scid vs PC-4.11". Well, I like to install programs into the Program Files folder, so I changed the path to "C:\Program Files\Scid vs PC-4.11". However, it gave me an error message saying that some files weren't able to copy into some directory. (Not the right permissions.)

So I uninstalled everything and tried the similar idea with the 32-bit program. I changed the path to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Scid vs PC-4.11", and the install seemed to go just fine.

So my question is, did I do something wrong with the attempt at installing the 64-bit program, or is this just a bug in the program?

Thank you for scidvspc 4.11

You definitely need the png pieces at the large sizes (install TkImg from source on Linux). Even these are noticeably scaled at large sizes.

Win64 has some extra "security" features over win32 i think. Even with 32 bit windows 7, there are issues, so the default install dir is now C:\Scid vs PC-4.11

MrEdCollins

As always, good work on the new version.

The new version didn't load all of my custom piece fonts.  A quick check and I realized it only loaded the first twelve.  And soon after I found this line in the GUI text file:

set boardStyles [lrange $boardStyles 0 11]

So I changed the 11 to a 20 and everything seems to be okay now.

On another note, it looks like two of the four bugs I mentioned on my bug reports page

http://www.edcollins.com/chess/scidvspc/bug-reports.htm

have been fixed.  The two that haven't are the first one and the last one.  Yes?  If so, I'll have to update that page.  (And find some more bugs for you.  Laughing)

I was able to instal scid vs pc 4.11 64 version in program files, after running it as administrator. Hope doing so may help you also..

@both stevenaaus and aadchesskid,

Thanks for the information; I think I found a solution that works for me.

I tried again to install the 64-bit version in the "Program Files" folder, but I had to change the permissions of the Scid config folder to get the configuration changes to be saved. However, I imagine that I'd have to also change the permissions of other folders later as ScidvsPC saved changes to other folders for various reasons. So I decided that Steve's advice was worth heeding, and I decided not to install into the "Program Files" folder.

So, I created a new folder named "Program Files (64-bit custom folder)", and I installed ScidvsPC 64-bit into that folder. As far as I can tell, it installed without problem, and I was able to make config changes and save them without having to change folder permissions. And the advantage for me is that I still have all of my installed programs in some kind of Program Files folder.

I have a question about editing game info; I have many games that need to have the same event/site etc. data changed. Unfortunately as far as I can tell the only way to do that is to individually save and replace reach game, which would be incredibly tedious. Is there some way I can do them all in a batch?

mldavis617

If I remember correctly, it is not recommended to install anything in the "Program Files" (i.e. 64-bit) folder directly.  Some installers will put their programs there correctly, but you are better off creating a separate folder as @EscherehcsE found out.  Windows will know what to do with it.

MrEdCollins

cortman,

Are the games in your database saved as a text-based pgn file?  If not, could you convert it to a pgn file?

If so, one solution which might not be too bad would be to load the file into any text editor (TextPad, for example.  I can't recommend Notepad because that program sucks.)  You could then highlight the all of the games that need to be changed and do a massive search and replace.

For example, say you wanted to change the Event name of all your games from the "American Open" to "49th American Open."  Load the file in Textpad, highlight these games, select Search and Replace, and make the change once for all games selected.

Hi Mr. Ed,

These are saved in a .si4 database. I just tried exporting them all to a PGN and that worked, so I guess now I can just run some regexes to add (or replace) the info I want. That will work. I was really hoping there would be a way to do it to the database itself, but this is better than nothing.

Thanks for the tip!

Oh, one other question- does anyone know why on earth it is called "Scid vs. PC"? I've been scratching my head about that. Smile

Yes - i added a basic global replace. From the Name Editor help:

"An single asterisk '*' may be used to match any name. This global substitution is only available for the EVENT, SITE and ROUND names - not the PLAYER, ELO or DATE names."

So just set the filter to the games you want to update, and try this.

And i see that the "*" does match ???? for DATE... Hmmm.

The first thing i noticed broken about Scid was the move take back when playing against Phalanx... Back then my main concern was making a Player vs Computer game that mostly worked. Hence the name. Ironically, mainline Scid also has some of the fixes i made to the tacgame and serious game feature, as Pascal and i hadn't fallen out by then.

I'd killl for the name ChessDB. i contacted the defunct ChessDB's author a couple of years ago, asking for this name, but he said he was still going to make new releases, laugh.

cortman

@stevenaaus- thanks for the answers! I looked at ChessDB when I was searching for a good game editor for Linux, and I am not surprised to hear it's defunct. I agree that it would make a good name.

Thanks again for making a great program current and even better! I have sent a small donation to the project.

So, the two new board sizes appear to be 90 and 100.  I scaled one of my fonts to those two sizes and added them to the font text file, but svpc appears not to use them.  Is this intentional or a bug (or my mistake)?

The large sizes are generated by doubling the smaller sizes (45,50,...,80) to 90, 100, ... 160. So for making custom pieces, you still only need the normal 25 to 80 sizes.

I think the FEN bug has been fixed ok. The fact engines don't stop appropiately is evident in a couple of places, and is on the todo list

Re the 11 piece style limit.. Yes - until i tweak the board options window, i think i'll keep that limit. Will doument it now.

I cant reproduce the FICS clock issue.
