"Another strange thing is that you cannot set the delete flag by pressing the delete button. Annoying!"

Try "Ctrl + Delete".

Question:  Step 2.  Instead of "finding Kasparov in the player database and accessing all of his games," at that point couldn't you only find Kasparov's games that were not blitz, and not rapid, and not blind, etc?

This way you wouldn't have to delete them later.  You're only finding and pulling up the games you're interested in.

I'd just like to throw some support behind Defacto's suggestion, it sounds like an excellent idea.

Currently I store my scid vs pc databases within a Dropbox folder so I can access them across machines, although not through mobile devices.   If you don't mind me asking, which apps would you recommend for generating pgn's of games as so far I've struggled to find a user friendly app for this purpose?

Which OS? I use SCID on the Go. It isn't the best but for the most part it does OK, though the transfer of games to my main DB is a bit cumbersome. Also, it needs to have a feature where you can't start a new game without being notified the current one has changes; I've lost some games that way (where I couldn't recreate it from memory).

@Martin. IOS9 on the iPad and iPhone.  I've found the same issue as Dafacto, everything tested thus far has either a lousy interface, costs a small fortune in order to accomplish a relatively simple task, or both.

Hi all,

I've seen someone in past had the same problem as I have with Scid vs. PC: compacting database does not delete games that have been marked for deletion. Using Scid vs. PC on windows 10 if it makes any difference.

But it does add 2 extra files to the database folder, with name TEMP at the end (.sg4 and .si4).

I've found workaround - to close the database and delete 2 original database files, then rename newly created files without "TEMP" (to restore the original names) then it opens all correctly and deleted games are gone, but this is somewhat annoying procedure. Isn't that something the program should be doing automatically?

Also, my database was not marked as "read only" and also I'm running with admin rights, so I don't know why the program can't replace original database files with compacted ones all by itself Undecided

The answer to that is in this thread somewhere. At the moment, I don't remember the specific steps. But I do remember it worked.

Yah , this is a windows only issue. To work around, close chess engines first.

Dead-Can-Dance

Hello, i have a question regarding scid vs pc.

i downloaded the million database and it seems that i need to open it manually everytime i start scid vs pc. this takes about 3 minutes and is kinda annoying, is there a way to preload the pgn into the program or are there other database programs, which can open these pgns automatically?

PossibleOatmeal

You really should not be loading giant pgns repeatedly into scid vs. pc.  Create a new database in scid vs. pc, then import the pgn into that.  This will convert the database into scid format, making all operations much faster.  PGN is flexible, but is not very efficient at all.
