SCID vs PC

Problem solved. It has nothing to do with Scid vs. PC or with the PGN files. Its a problem in my installation of Windows 10 Pro. My Windows has a duplicated downloads folder. Even if I trash one of them it produces another one to get two again. Both are in the same folder with the same name apparently but probably one has name in Portuguese and another in English in the system. I moved the PGN file from the download folder to the desktop and it opened with no issues. Files in the twin download folders open normally but I was not just opening the PGN (it opened in the text editor) I was inserting it into a Scid format database, so doing a file conversion probably.

We can just blame Microsoft - It's always fun to do that. :-)

I was never a fan of Windows. It still is not as smooth as the Macintosh managing languages different from English and converting from one language to another. So I have a "Downloads" folder and a "Transferências" folder in the same computer, inside the same user's folder.

I have scid vs. pc 4.21 for linux, but chess960 positions are not recognized, I thought it was supposed to be? If not, what are the instructions for how to get it to work?

I can open a chess960 pgn but it fails at the castling move.

Works fine for me (except 960 as mentioned above), you have to make sure you have the right tk/tcl packages installed, maybe they can be installed from the software manager, but otherwise I used

apt-file search tclsh

eg, to identify and then installed the relevant packages and the install and operation went fine after that.

Searching for movements I can't get any 0-0 or 0-0-0 and I can't get any move with check or check-mate either. What's happening?

I got 5 hits with this search in CaissaBase. Are you using capital O's and not zeros for castling?

EscherehcsE

Also, if you're searching for a mate or check, you need to tick the appropriate bullet under "Check Test".

JogoReal

Ok, thanks a lot. I was doing it wrong in many ways. Was using zero 0-0 or small o o-o for rook in place of capital O O-O. Also I was doing ++ for mate in place of #. And I was not doing both: # and bullet under "check test".

I know right, Shane's Chess Information Database would be ridiculous

JogoReal

What is not ridiculous?

Can I see a tree of filtered games without having to create a new base with the filtered games?

You can drag the filtered games into the Clipbase and Tree them there.

JogoReal

Thank you Salterton. It works great. never did that before.

Hello,

Scid vs PC is a really great tool but I have a problem. When i load a database, piece animations become quite laggy. If i close the Game List window, the lag settles off. Is there anyone experiencing this lag too?

stevenaaus

I'm planning on releasing Scid vs PC 4.22 shortly...

I notice Kingbase link is dead, so have changed the recommended database to  Caïssabase http://caissabase.co.uk/

Any ideas ? Cheers

The last-move-repetition in variations It's something to do with the PGN standard iirc.

Yes, it's an annoying little thing, but probably won't be getting changed at all due to possibility of bugs / incompatibilities.
