How to import opening book from scalachess Github(https://github.com/ornicar/scalachess/blob/7e65fa3beb00fa5f4ff3bafce48dd35835d61f44/src/main/scala/opening/FullOpeningPart1.scala) onto Scidvs.PC?

This does not look very good.  I would be very careful!

regarding SCID vs PC

version 4.22

Tools - board screenshoot  option is disabled. Anyone knows how to make it enabled?

SoSlowMoJo

Hello,

I'm using SCID vs PC 4.22, with Stockfish 14.1 and LeelaChessZero 0.28.2 OpenCL.

I recently downloaded Syzygy 5men-tablebase.

Whereas SF seems to work fine with the tablebase, it's not the case with Lc0.

I analyzed the following position : 3K4/8/8/8/8/1Q6/4b1pk/8 w - - 0 1

SF instantly finds the winning line and show 28 TB hits.

Lc0 doesn't seem to find a winning line and is stuck at 1 TB hit.

Do you know how I could fix that issue please ?

The design of the default chess dot com set is proprietary, so my guess is not.

But "Burnett" and "Merida3" look pretty similar.

I prefer the chess.com pieces...

and I saw them online, but not for dowload.

NaturalMoves

Hi Folks,

I'm interested in using SCID vs PC as a new user. Where can I find some directions to get started? Looking at this forum, it looks like there are quite a few bugs to work around. I owned Chessbase ~25 years ago, and found myself futzing with the the database more than I spent studying/playing chess. Would this be similar if I worked with SCID vs PC? Thanks for any advice or personal opinions!

ChessElk

Hi NaturalMoves. As a Linux user, I have to use Scid. I am very satisfied and train only with Scid, including Stockfish connection. The best choice for me.
Documentation can be found on the internet. Search for Scid and documentation. Good luck.

Here's my newbie follow up question(s): I've successfully downloaded SCID vs PC and CaissaBase with 5 million games. Everything appears very nice, and in futzing around with it I can see it's a great tool; however I can't get the Search>General function to work. I have a database open, and I can see a bunch of Morphy games in the game list. When I do a Search>General search for Morphy games, the search bar chugs along for maybe a second, and then returns Result: 0/5,000,000. What am I missing? P.S. - The Current Board function works perfectly well, showing some 8,000+ games starting from a Scotch Gambit position. If I wish to pare this list down further, I have opened up the Search>General window and search for White wins with 1-80 ply. Again, the search bar says 0/8000 found. Any specific links to the most comprehensive directions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi NaturalMoves, you may have solved your issue by now; but if not here are my notes on Player searches in case they're any help -

SEARCH - SEARCHING FOR GAMES BY A PARTICULAR PLAYER
Open the relevant database.
Search / General
Enter the player name in the relevant field - White or Black and set the Ignore Colors appropriately.
Set the Filter Setting radio button to 'Reset filter'.
Generally the Player name is in the format surname, firstname
The player name is case insensitive, but such a search is likely to return unwanted entries (e.g. searching for nakamura will find more players than Hikaru).
You can use wildcards (* ?) to assist a search BUT then you must enclose the text in quotes and it becomes case sensitive - "*Nak*Hikaru*"

BETTER METHOD USING PLAYER FINDER -
Search / Player Finder
"The Player Finder window displays a list of names of players in the current database. Selecting a player will open the Player Info window to display more detailed information about that player."

I've never done that myself, but I think @DunnoItAll goes over the process in Post # 156 (page 8).

Using ScidvsMac on Catalina.  Animation seems "bouncy".  Pieces seem to place, pull back, then place again for every move.  This happens on every animation time except turned off (0 ms).  Is this just a tkl problem or something in the scid code?  I don't recall seeing this on much earlier versions, but haven't used on the mac in a while.

Other issue is that the only version that works on my 2018 Mac Air is the new 64bit beta version (ScidvsMac-4.23.x64.dmg).  No other version comes up when I click on the icon.  Thus I cannot check to see if the piece animation happened on earlier versions.

See this to see what I mean: https://imgur.com/a/MuNHWl2

It seems GIF makes the problem look minor due to conversion.  But look at moves 2 and 3 to see it better.  This bouncing happens for every move and it is very evident when playing.

Yeah - known issue - it's just buggy :(. I've had some feedback that this is not an issue on the latest macOS, but I'm not testing it myself as new macOS is a bug highway imho.

sangahm

Thanks Steven.  I just set animation speed to 0 and it's less bothersome.  I appreciate the Mac build as there are not many quality chess apps and ScidvsMac is one of the, if not THE, best!

stevenaaus

You can try replacing the Tcl and Tk Frameworks with the Wish-8.6.4 frameworks. (found here https://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/mac-64bit-unsupported/ I think there is instructions in the tarball). It works better for me on my Mojave system (though of course i run the 32 bit Mac app mostly) - engine responsiveness and animation are both better iirc.

sangahm

I updated the wish framework.  I don't see a change in the animation, but I'll watch to see if I notice any other improvements elsewhere.

stevenaaus

Ok... but just make sure they are installed properly into the ScidvsPC App, and the about window says

"Using Tcl/Tk version 8.6.4".

It's not straight forward. I love my old Macbooks (though my main desktop is Linux). It's just so much effort to fight Apple (and the core Tcl/tk team) who put everyone on the hardwarwe upgrade cycle. Once upon a time Apple said they'd support a 64bit Carbon Framework going into the futture, but realised they'd sell more computers if the obsolesce things, and pulled the plug when the software was almost fininshed.
