It's a reasonably cute piece of family entertainment loosely based on the book. It's not a documentary; it's not a "chess" movie; it's not an attempt to dramatize the book.

I saw it, probably eight or nine years ago when I had been playing chess for a couple of years. It was pretty dull and forgettable then, but peeps seem to love itUndecided

Any link for that anyone?

Any movie with Pippi from The Last Don is a good one.
Neh serieusly, I've seen the movie a couple of times. It's worth the time. It is a very romantic happy ending movie though. But when you're a sucker for that like me, get out the popcorn. It's a fun waste of time.

Maybe I'm just taking the movie too seriously.

Seems a lot of chess players do. It's a movie about relationships, not chess. It's partly based on real people, but it's essentially fiction. I'm with Wilbert -- grab some popcorn, put your feet up, and be entertained for a little while.

Yeah, I haven't seen the movie in forever, so I may be wrong...

But it's just a foil for the prosaic and practical advice of playing the board not the man... here's this guy playing blitz in a part, i.e. far from a pro, telling the kid to use psychology.

In real life you have to use a little of both, some use one more than another.  In top chess there is of course a ludicrous amount of technique and skill involved, but there are also a lot of mind games.

I'd say that Josh wouldn't have been at a high enough level to recommend worrying at all about psychology. It's well known that it becomes more of a factor in any sport as a player's technical skills improve, and Josh's at that time wouldn't have been high enough to be thinking about it. I'm 1900ish and it would certainly be detrimental to my chess if I spent less of my time just trying to find good moves.

I think you would have a lot of questions if you saw it, woodshover. And it's like 2 hours long! I'm not sure you have the attention-span for such an obstacleLaughing

Woodshover, I have neither the money, nor the connections to "always" be "stoned on something". And accusing me of such joy only makes me sadCry

I personally looved the movie. I think it was really good and probably one of the best chess movies out there. For some reason mixing fiction and non fiction as they did with Fischer worked very well and before any serious tournament, I would always watch a piece of this movie.

Doesn't just about every film ever made mix fiction and non-fiction?

Nope, you're not.  Well, if I can be considered a chess player, anyway.

Bit of a stretch, that.

Exactly why do you think the movie sucked? I'm curious because I haven't seen it.

Avatar of bigpoison

Boring.  There wasn't even one explosion!

It may be two against millions, bigpoison! But I'm not scaredLaughing

"All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important!"

No explosions in that movie, either.

I've always felt this was one of the best sports movies out there, even for non-chessplayers.  (You can debate whether or not chess is a sport, but this is clearly a "sports movie".)  It should be required viewing for all parents of child athletes.

I've also always liked that Josh Waitzkin never actually became a world-class GM.  It's a nice validation to the lessons of the movie... instead of focusing on one competitive skill at all costs, he pursued a variety of interests and had a balanced life.  I imagine that's probably much better for him as a person that way.

He only quit because he wasn't able to get to the top. If he could have made it, he would have. If you read his 1995 book "Attacking Chess" you'll understand why I say this.
