Dear ladies and gents,
The secret of the Soviet's school, Botvinnik's, was using the pawn. As you know, Botvinnik said, "the front pawn always cries for help", which meant where's the knight which the pawn'll support :-) So Alekhine moved out his knight first in his Alekhine's defense in order that the pawn wouldn't cry for help!
