Self control

Hello chessfriends,

I am a beginner and I always react too quickly to moves. I don't think if I can be eaten and my visual attention is very poor when I compare it with other players. How can I improve, be calm and think before moving. I have tried more than 30 times but I don't improve. Thanks for advice.

If you think your visualization is bad why not train those tactics? Try to solve puzzles without touching the pieces on the board or analyzing the moves on the computer, so that you can see everything by yourself. Start with the simple ones and move on as you progress.

Also, i think you can be happy about not being eaten Tongue Out.

Some tips from another beginner, rated much lower than yourself (so take them or leave them, I guess:)

-Judit Polgár says she was trained, starting out in chess, to sit on her hands and think the position over before moving. If it worked for a Grandmaster ...

-You might also simply be having trouble seeing hanging pieces or tactical combinations. You can stare at the board for ten minutes, but if you don't recognize certain patterns, it may not help anyway. Do you do tactics puzzles? Those can be good for learning pattern recognition. There are several (free) training sites for this. chess.emrald.net is a good one. The problems start at hanging pieces and one-move mates, and move on from there.

-I also struggle with reading the board accurately sometimes, and I think it might be because I play a lot of blitz chess. There are actually a good number of (higher-rated) players out there who recommend against blitz chess for beginners, since it encourages thinking and moving quickly. So turning more towards games with looser time control might be best for learning patience and good habits.

Hope this helps!

There's nothing wrong on quickly moving pieces. What's wrong is you didn't know what is the idea of the move your playing.

If you have a plan, you will know what is and what are the moves that need to be played quickly and where to stop and calculate.

Visualization is the same as tactics. So you must practice how to move piece on your mind. Anand calls it a mental diagram in our brains. :D
