To chessph;  The original post was pretty barbaric, and not worth repeating.  You think I'm disgusting. Were on the same page. I am mentally stable. Part of this thread was heavily edited by the mods, for obvious reasons, so your continuity is broken. But if at any time, you think my post are offensive, then please, by all means, report me to staff.  Refer to post 18 + 22, by Henry_James for further understanding.

Now, the mod deleted your whole comment. No sense at all have you? You are crazy.

I think everyone is wrong on this one. En passant was invented in 1964 to make amateur chess players who only played with their drunk uncle at Christmas parties can be made to feel stupid around tournament players for not knowing about it.

To chessph;  Your barking up the wrong tree. Please refer to post 68 +78        To jurassicmark; can you please explain it to chessph, and Vulpes_Vulpes.  They think I'm a blood thirsty animal about to take over the world.  I don't want the world, even if you gave it to me on a silver platter; I just wanna dig my car out of the snow.

I didn't read the posts here, in case this has been mentioned, but from what I remember reading a long time ago the whole reason it was adopted was because so many games were being drawn because of the pawns getting all locked up. So the logic behind it was simple: if chess is a simulation of war (we hadn't yet created planes & all the modern technology we have now) it didn't make sense to allow a pawn to cross a square controlled by the enemy pawn without competing for it in some way just like an army couldn't just jump over a parcel of land that the enemy controlled without first competing for it. Try to look at a square as a piece of land.

That was never the reason for the rule.

If it wasn't then it should have been. :)

I find this thread to be a melting pot of all kinds of nonsense (not that it's any one person's fault).

I thought i did explain it, but I don't mind trying again:  The OP's original remarks included a satirical statement (or question) about slaughtering old people after they were no longer useful.  This remark was subsequently edited either by the OP or the moderators.  But, Ronald's satricial reply (which was totally in context) was not edited or moderated at the same time.  Ergo, Ronald was made to look like a jackass, or perhaps worse, which isn't fair.

If the moderators are editing content they need to be aware of the consequences to the other posters.

Thank you very much Mark. I don't mind looking like a jackass. I've made a career out of doin that. However; some further explanation came to me today. The OP asked a question about capturing a pawn, "in passing". The rational was that the PAWN, had out-lived its usefullness. It got so far down the board, and got killed. The comment was RELATED to people. In that, they get so far down the board of life; and then they die. Most posters after that thought that the 2 wearn't connected. Like myself, some posters thought that's disgusting; because we dis-connected. We thought he was just out of his mind, wishing harm to old people. That's why MY comment looks out of place. I should of said; "by the way, YOUR goin to be OLD someday. I'm not blaming the mods. Some people need to learn how to read a thread. Now; if you'll excuse me, I have some old people locked in my basement that I must go torture!   (just kidding)

JimmyKay's bit of misinformation should not be allowed to stand:

En passant (from Frenchin passing) is a move in the board game of chess.[1] It is a special pawn capture which can occur immediately after a player makes a double-step move from its starting position, and an enemy pawn could have captured it had the pawn moved only one square forward. The opponent captures the just-moved pawn as if taking it "as it passes" through the first square. The resulting position is the same as if the pawn had moved only one square forward and the enemy pawn had captured normally.

The en passant capture must be done on the very next turn, or the right to do so is lost.[2] It is the only occasion in chess in which a piece captures but does not replace the captured piece on its square. If an en passant capture is the only legal move available, it must be made. En passant capture is a common theme in chess compositions.

The en passant capture rule was added in the 15th century when the rule that gave pawns an initial double-step move was introduced. It prevents a pawn from using the two-square advance to pass an adjacent enemy pawn without the risk of being captured.

I am sorry, Chastity. I was trying to be funny in this thread in desperate need of some levity. I guess I failed!

Jimmykay,

No need to apologize, I'm probably the only one who missed your intent.  I go into shock everytime I learn some new thing about chess I hadn't known before.

For all I know chess960 didn't originate until Spock introduced it on Startrek...er...

Chastity

It was actually Spock's human mother, Amanda, who invented Chess960. She thought the her husband and the rest of the Vulcan's had developed too much opening theory; she felt the game was ruined.

By playing Chess960, she was able to circumvent Sarek's superior opening knowledge and began defeating him regularly.
