Should FIDE Add a new Title ?

The so called "SuperGM" for 2700 and above ? A new criteria for the elite as the GM Title has become diluted over the years, with thousands of GM's around and new ones being added all the time.  Few can say the title means as much as it did in the 60's or 70's. This has been called for many years now and FIDE has done nothing.

The counter could be there are already too many titles in organized chess.  GM, IM, FM, CM, NM, WIM, WFM, WGM, SM, etc, makes a virtual alphabet soup of it, such that you learn how the pieces move and play long enough, you are sure to earn a title at some point.

Discuss.

Side note.  The ages that someone gets the GM Title keeps getting lower all the time too.  I am awaiting for the day soon, when a player earns it, not yet out diapers !

MM is needed - Magnuslike master, for 2800+ (alternatively - PAYWAGAWIM: Play Anything You Want And Get Away With It Master).

Why do not drop the women specific titles? I'm a firm believer of women and men equality. Having a separate title for women, usually with lower requirements than the generic equivalent title (note that I don't say men's title) is a form of discrimination.

Regarding the SuperGM title, I agree but a better name should be found.

Supergrandmaster. Superdupergrandmaster. Pooperscoopergrandmaster. Adding those 3 should keep things managable in my lifetime, I think.

If you make a new title, then it too will be deflated.

LM : Legendary Master (rated 2900+)

Maybe you should not keep the GM title if A) you are inactive or B) your rating goes under 2500. There was an open tournament in Mexico recently where a load of Cuban GM's took part, 7 of them were rated under 2500..and these aren't guys in their 50's either...

I think the title names are fine, maybe they should just raise the standards for all titles by 100 points? The only issue is who gets grandfathered in or not ? Some players may object....

So were you there?

No, but I'm so sad I read all the tournament reports in The Week In Chess. Its not just Cuba, there are sub 2500 GM's in a lot of countries but they seem to have the highest percentage of 'active' players. It casts doubt on the validity of how they came by those titles, almost certainly in restricted events where they could - how can I say this? - get the results they needed for a GM norm against fairly weak opposition. The Phillipines and Vietnam are also not innocent in this respect. The Phillipines supposedly have 15 GM's..Fide doesn't show any of them in their rating list.

If there were another title, it would need to be one that is somewhat stable over time.

Something like: If you stay in the worlds top 50 for 60 non consecutive rating periods (now monthly - so 5 years), then you get the title Super GM.

Regardless of inflation, the number of people with this title wouldn't get out of control.

To quote one member of the Cobblepot clan, "Super Duper Ooper" Grandmaster would be really the best one.

How about those who really stink? Super Gas Masters?

CM = candidate muppet, only to be awarded to those who after 20 years of slugging it out at a chess club can't work out that the bongcloud is a bad opening.

I agree. I find women titles are condescending towards women. They give impression as if WGMs are not as good as their GM counterparts. WGMs should should be referred to as GMs, and the same goes with the other women titles. Those women earn their titles and they work just as hard. If anybody has any doubt about a woman's capacity to play chess, they should play chess with the Polgar sisters. It could be a pretty humbling experience. Laughing
