Well, it depends.
If it's in the opening, maybe he wants to try out some variation, depending on who the opponent is or what happened in chat before I might, unless I see something seriously wrong. Further on in the game I'd just ignore it.

If I'm playing a training match in real life with someone much stronger, they might suggest a move after seeing me struggle for some time. But in that case I always ask them why the move is good-unless it's blatantly obvious. The purpose of these games is for me to able to find good moves-and when my opponent points them out, it's helpful.
On the Internet, I agree I'd find my opponent advising me very strange. And the only reason I'd take their advice would be if I honestly could not see a better move (and I'd triple check that move, suspicious of a trap).
happened to me once.a guy 400 points above me told me he was going to resign as i had beat him.He told me the 4 moves that would mate him.I would never have
seen them.I thought it was a trick but it wasnt. He must have thought I was better
than I was.
Words of wisdom from one of my opponents. "When we're playing a game, I am not your friend."
lol, yep..
at another site a few years back the "msg" box and the "notebook" box were too close to together, so once in a blue moon someone would make that mistake. so all the time I would purposely put the wrong plans and send it to them :)
Can't say this has other happened to me. But I'm guessing that if someone suggested a move, I would ask (before moving) why it is they feel inclined to want to "help me out". Is it a ploy, or is it they want to play a particular opening (as rooperi suggested). However, if such were the case, I would think that they would make that known before the game even started.
if my opponent is telling me to make a move or not to make a move, sould i listen to him/her or not?
would it be more likely they are trying to mislead me, or steer me into a position they are more familier with or would they genuinely be helping or trying to make a match close.
