Should I just quit chess at this point?

I'm honestly getting really sick of this game now. I've been playing for about 2 years now and I've been stuck at 900-1000 Elo for ages without getting any better. Every time I get to 1000 I end up dropping down again, I've watched countless videos, read books, I do puzzles more than I play games, but I'm still crap. I feel like I've put in so much time and its done nothing. All I want is to be decent at the game, like 1300 or something. Do I just give up at this point? I don't think I'll ever be any good at this.

If you cant get benefits from countless videos, books and puzzles yourself then find a coach

Btw, I've been moving chess pieces for 20+ years and I am a chess crap too

  1. Learn core principles.
  2. Apply them in slow games.
  3. Analyze your decisions afterward.

This is the framework I use with students I coach.

You really shouldn’t give up on chess. You’re clearly putting in a lot of work and care about chess and improving- and I get it, I’ve tilted many times before, quit chess, but ultimately I’ve resurfaced and fought, even through adversity.

For 4 months, I couldn’t gain any elo. None. Then, something just… clicked. I can’t really explain it, but since being stuck I’ve gained like 75 elo. It’s less about getting better and more about having fun- you play better when you’re enjoying the game.

It will never be easy to reach your goals, but it was never meant to be. Take a week off and come back refreshed. Watch chess streamers not for knowledge, but for entertainment. Play an opening that excites you! Let your curiosity roam, because you have tons of potential and you shouldn’t waste two years on a lifetime worth of reward.
