You should definitely do OTB! But one thing I have to say is that you should be prepared. If anything, chess.com standard is overrated so players of OTB rating will be higher than chess.com's standards. For example, a 1000 rated person can attain 1200-1400 chess.com rating.

I doubt this is true for live-standard. It seems to correlate pretty well with OTB ratings.

Not so. You are comparing apples to oranges; OTB features much more potential out of the players with much longer time controls. I doubt people regularly play long time controls of G/60 here as 15-30 minute games are the most common.

I agree, I was just saying that OTB ratings seem to be more similar to live-standard ratings than "online" turn-based ratings.

I think if you go to a OTB tournament it will make you a better chess player. why : because you get the opportunity to sit with your opponent after the game to analyze not only your ideas but also your opponents.
also you may get to see other players sitting and analyzing.
you will also have to deal with chess under pressure. having to deal with tournaments psychology you sit and calculate and suddenly your heart start to beat faster because you are not sure you can handle your opponents threats.

SPARTANEMESIS

Anything that involves more than sitting in front of a computer or similar device can get your heart beating faster.  I've had my heart pounding, and been sweating while cold simply because I was doing my utmost to be as quiet as possible while moving very slowly... well, maybe there was a bit more to it.  BobbyDK does make a good point though.

It's a great chess experience, so you should definitely give it a try and see if you enjoy it Smile

You're welcome.  One more thing: the impression I have from what I've read on the forums as well as from my online games here, is that a good amount of chess players do not appreciate a comment such as: "Good game," after they've lost.  Some will take it as an insult so bad the likes of which I cannot even type here as it would be censored.  There seems to be a general consensus that it's OK to say to an opponent who has won however.  Forget the fact that in many sports and other activities it's natural for the victor and defeated to share a similar remark as a sign of respect for one's opponent.  I'm not telling you not to say it, just what to expect if you do.  "Good luck" is another one some chess players won't appreciate as some believe luck has nothing to do with the outcome to a game that has no dice or random aspects.  I happen to believe there's an element of luck (or fortune, if you will) in almost everything.  Best of luck.  And don't forget the clock.

Good luck! Playing OTB is a great experience.

Remember, now that you're playing in a serious tournament you have a lot of time at your disposal (what's the time control?). Try to move slowly and always recheck your analysis.

SPARTANEMESIS

By the way I should've mentioned that I've never had anyone appear even remotely offended when saying "good luck" or "good game" during an OTB chess game.  If I ever did offend someone with such a remark they kept it to themselves, but I don't think that's the case.  However I've never been to a tournament.

bresando

Actually,I have also never encountered a player offended by a "good luck" or "good game" during a tournament. It's just one of those crazy things may that may happen online.

Internet chess and garbage chess are synonomous.  Ratings mean nothing on here.  Here's what increases your rating on chess.com:

1) Do you have quick fingers with the mouse?
2) Do you avoid mouse slips?
3) Are you able to toggle pieces faster in completely drawn positions avoiding 50 moves or 3-fold to win completely drawn positions?
4) Are you and your opponent playing your "bread and butter"?  Or are you working on another opening?
5) Do you win simply because you set up traps better than he does for your limited 5 (or even 15) minutes?

Whereas with Over The Board chess, at real, legitimate tournaments, the following determines who wins:

1) Do you actually have a plan, or are you just pushing wood?
2) Can you accurately calculate?  Standard time controls, like 40 moves in 2 hours followed by sudden death in 1 hour, require accurate calcualtion in order to win.  This isn't about cheapos and 1-move threats/traps like internet blitz is.
3) Can you keep your cool when something bad happens?  For example, let's say you drop a pawn.  In some cases, that alone can be fatal.  But in other cases, it simply means you need to defend and fight for a draw instead of trying to win all the time.  It's part of "Chess Maturity".  You aren't going to just drop pieces and then race your opponent out of time as most tournaments now-a-days typically have 5 second delay (USA) or 30 second increment (FIDE - Europe/Asia/etc, and a few USA tournaments), so the board dictates the result, NOT the clock.

I'll tell you right now.  People that go bragging about how their blitz rating here or on ICC or any other live chess site are worthless if they can't also play a decent game over the board.  Someone who has roughly a 2100 over the board rating (like myself) and a 1700 rating on here (like myself) is significantly stronger than some ding-dong that has a 2400 rating on here and a 1200 rating over the board (or unrated, for that matter, never playing over the board).

Now, of course, if you have a 2400 rating here, and a legitimate 2200 rating over the board, then obviously you are nobody to sneeze at!  That said, for every legitimate 2400 on sites like ICC, there are a good 5 to 10 times as many that are illegitimate 2400 players either because they use computers or because they are clueless once you put more than 5 minutes on the clock.
