The Kings Gambit...Following his shock defeat Borgov's life spirals out of control as he drowns his sorrows in vodka and sinks into a deep depression. Feeling intense shame he leaves his life behind and disappears from public view. His whereabouts remain a mystery for 6 months until finally former champion and Soviet hero Mikhail Botvinnik tracks him down on the icy shores of Lake Baikal and convinces him to turn his life around. A rematch with Harman is arranged and we follow the intense preparations as Botvinnik struggles to heal both the man and the chess player. In the game he dare not lose Borgov risks it all with the white pieces 1.e4 e5 2.f4!

Beth wins the world championship, after a contentious run-up to the event. She loses the first game embarrassingly, and forfeits the second. After that she wins, but is unsatisfied as she drops from sight, refuses to defend her title and descends further into a misanthropic madness.
