Especially online, there is always the hope that your opponent will make a mistake... but is expecting this disrespectful? Or is it just playing the game?

I know a lot of people (most notably Levy) say that you should never resign. But at what point in a game is it hopeless? Does this change at a certain level (500+, 1000+, 1500+, 2000+ etc) or is it based on something else, like what pieces you've lost, or how much time you have? Interested in anyone's opinions on this.
