I disagree, I often put those ideas into practice.

I agree but I will argue that he "dumps them down" a bit more than needed.

Being simple is one thing , being simplistic or over-simplistic though is another.

Agreed, but he understands the market he is targeting.

Yup , he certainly does. Maybe more than anyone ever did!

I like his books.  I like his approach.  I love his "snarky" attitude.  But when was the last time you heard a top level player say they got where they were because of Silmans books?

To be fair, when most of them are asked about books, they usually reply, "I have never read a chess book."

Most?

I've heard 1 or 2... and it's very misleading. For example everyone has to learn basic endgames. You don't just magically figure out which positions are important and solve them all yourself.

I know the sort of homework coaches give for example. It's the same sort of thing you'd get from a book (games, puzzles, studies, etc).

And then there are players like Svidler who said his parents had a library full of chess books and he read them all.

Anyway, for must of us, does it make sense to try to imitate the path taken by "a top level player"?

No one should try to completely copy them, but individually they give evidence for things that are necessary and unnecessary.

For example it's likely necessary to start chess at a young age if you want to be very good.

It's likely unnecessary for beginners to read books to improve, even if they aim for a very high level (if we're going to take e.g. Naka's claims at face value).

If something was unnecessary for Naka, does it necessarily follow that it would not be helpful for a good many of us?

Farm_Hand

I didn't say they provide evidence for what's helpful, just for what's necessary and unnecessary.

If all GMs have something in common, it's reasonable to assume it's necessary for all people who want to improve to that level.

If a GM has not done something, then it's reasonable to assume it's not necessary for all people who want to improve to that level or any level under it.

Farm_Hand

Anyway, as I said in #7 of this topic, if you're learning and enjoying it then it's good no matter what other people say.

Why should we care about what is necessary "for all people"? Does it make more sense for an individual to be concerned about what has a good chance of being helpful for the individual?

Farm_Hand

It's fun to bring up e.g. Naka's claim because it's eminently reasonable to assume that books are necessary,

It's just a curiosity. It doesn't have much to do with helping the OP improve, but I never said it did. I gave my serious replies on the first page, and now the conversation has shifted to something else, as is common in forum topics.

If you want to give advice to the OP, that's fine too.

Is anyone assuming that books are necessary "for all people". Who is doing the shifting? If a person is, instead, thinking about what might be personally helpful, does it make much sense to be concerned about what was necessary for Naka?

I don't mind answering simple questions, but at some point I'm going to have to start charging you a fee.

However I think if you tried you can answer those questions for yourself. They really are simple.

Or, instead of rhetorical nonsense, if you'd like to make some claims and offer evidence, then at that point we can have an actual dialogue.

You are the one who brought up "Naka" in #40 in response to my #39. I am sure we can all understand if you do not want to discuss whether or not it makes sense to be concerned about what was necessary for "Naka". The answer is pretty obvious.

Spiffe

I've never really understood why Silman drives so many people so crazy.

Personally, I would say he's the single most influential & valuable author I've read in my study of nearly 100 different books over the years.  How To Reassess Your Chess and Silman's Endgame Manual are two of the top 10 books on my list.  I still do heed his advice about identifying & following through on a plan based on the imbalances in a position.

You can judge for yourself if I'm a strong enough player for you to care about my opinion on the topic.

Incorrect.

Bacon and BobbyT brought up "top level" players and alluded to Naka's claim that he had never read a chess book. (#29 and #30). My response to them was that is misleading to players who wish to improve. (#38).

Your #39 was mostly agreeing with me, and my #40 was playing devil's advocate for Bacon and Bobby. I further explain that such topics (what top level players have done) is mostly a curiosity, and reiterated my advice that books are fine as long as you're enjoying them and learning from them (#7 #43 and #45).

So my claims have been

 - It's not bad to read Silman. Learning about chess while enjoying it is enough.
 - Naka's claim is misleading
 - What top players have done is a side topic and a curiosity

Your claims:

 - Note you made none until #48

All your other posts have been copy-pastes or rhetorical questions prompting the other party to imagine what you're trying to say and then argue against it, effectively asking them to argue both sides while you just ask trite questions.

So in #47 I'm saying **** you, I'm not going to do your work for you. If you want to have a dialogue with me you'll have to actually say something yourself.

E.SUROV: Thanks! One of our followers wants you to name three best chess books.

L.ARONIAN: It's hard to name "the best books". I'd rather name my favourite ones. First of all, there is a book I enjoy, let me recall its title... perhaps it's Secrets of a Chess Composer by Kasparian, in which he tells the readers how he composed his studies. This is the book I love, please excuse me for not remembering its title. (Secrets of a Study Composer, published in Russian in 1981 - Ed.) This is a tremendous book about the process of composing studies. Another book I love is Into the Fire of Attack by Tal and Damsky (it seems to have been translated into English under the title Attack with Mikhail Tal - Ed.). It's also magnificent. Besides, I enjoy Seven Deadly Chess Sins by Jonathan Rowson. It's a very atypical book which raises extremely important topics. I think that if a world-class GM studies it well, he/she could get a kind of a manual on psychological struggle at the top level.

Q:
Is there a chess book that had a

profound influence on you?
MVL:
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by David
Bronstein and Tom Fürstenberg. Even
though nowadays it’s more like ‘The
Computer’s Apprentice’.

Ok, that makes more sense.

Although I will say a sort of unanimous non-mention of a book says more than 1 or 2 quirky individuals (who I may or may not believe).

Also whether a book is beyond them now is meaningless as they'd either be recommending it to a beginner or talking about what they found useful in the past.
