Okay so, somebody has to ask it:  Why was the English Lawn Bowling game called Skittles?  Or is it turtles all the way down?

This seems unresolved. Still I search for the answer as well. Hmm. Kudos to the florid description though- "creepy poisonous artificial ingredients with a big dose of high fructose corn syrup derived from genetically modified corn." Ok. Idling on this.

I believe it is from that "lawn bowling" game.  There is a video on youtube of Cuba in the 1920's, and it looks like a combination of horseshoes and bowling.  The players would huck the ball into the air at the pins, and it was a racous mob scene, trash talk, side bets - there was no lawn, only dirt.

This is probably where chess stole the term, as a room full of blitz games and post-mortems, there is more informal, and sometimes racous behavior which takes place.
