Hello, my friend! Well, I can't say that I have switched my Smith-Morra yet but that is only because, unlike you, I have not had much opportunity to play more OTB tournaments. I still love the Morra for casual and blitz play. If I were to play more OTB tournaments, I would still whip it out but perhaps I would mix it with some Open Sicilians. The reasons I would have for doing so would be mainly so I do not become such a predictable opponent that people will start preparing for the Morra when they play me. Also, one must admit, that if Black knows what to do (and he keeps his wits about him), he has good chances of neutralizing the Morra. Finally, even if the gambit continues to be effective for me, the fear I have is that people will just start declining it all the time and there goes my fun. Of course, White is usually okay if Black declines but, for one, I HATE playing the c3-Sicilian and that is precisely what the game often transposes to if Black chooses to decline with either 3...d5 or 3...Nf6.
Good luck on your continued playing!
I have been considering switching from my tried and true Smith Morra to playing the study intensive Open Sicilian due to some mixed results recently. Have any of you guys made this change? Or similar ones? What made you do it?
