Don't worry about the eating Frank.  Everyone has to have some pleasures in their life.

Wine is my downfall (or saviour).

No doubt one day it will turn out chess is some sort of filthy habbit too. :)

I have a problem when people compare smoking to over-eating .  The biggest difference being that when someone pigs out it is NOT harming the health of any others nearby . With smoking that is NOT the case . If I am in a restaurant eating twice as much as I should it wont damage anyone's health but mine .  If I am at the same restaurant and people are smoking around me the second hand smoke I breathe may well damage my health too , even though I choose not to smoke .  Some will say secondhand smoke doesnt hurt anyone but I believe it does .  However, even if it didn't it will certainly ruin my meal as I cant tolerate the stench of smoking while I am trying to have a meal , and noone should have to .

Actually that's a specific and respectfull point but it's not in the subject. How come some americans ridiculously generalise and say things like Saint-Frank did is the point. We are not dealing FAT VS SMOKE now Master Reb.

Smoking isn't allowed in restaurants here. Although the casinos are often exempt because they are on reservations (where a lot of state laws don't apply).

I have never smoked, and I'm glad I never started.

Two things I find curious: 1) A high percentage of smokers simply do not believe that secondhand smoke is harmful despite the evidence to the contrary 2) Many people (both smokers and non-smokers) actually think that being overweight is worse for your health than smoking is.

Ziryab

I smoked a pipe while studying chess at a table on the back porch. Since quitting smoking, I've spent less time with my chess books. I miss the pipe, but not the sore throat. I'm reminded of the dangers of smoking every time I unroll the chessboard that had two holes burned into it when I dropped my pipe once.

Glad you quit smoking Ziryab .... :)

I plan to own shares of a tobacco company so I really appreciate the customers who willingly kill themselves to support my dividend income.

Tobacco is a drug. More people die from tobacco than heroine,  cocaine, pot combined. Tobacco should be outlawed world wide and the lands now being used to grow tobacco should be used for food crops to feed the hungry.   I consider anyone who smokes to be a disgusting animal.

Ah boy, them New Yorkers got no love of liberty.

I think outlawing shit should be outlawed.

What you're talkin' about ain't hatin' second hand smoke.  You're talkin' about not suffering fools gladly.

I'm a smoker and I, too, can't stand it when folks smoke while I'm eating.

As an intolerant ex-smoker, I don't want to be exposed to smoke in any public place, not just while eating. It leaves a horrible smell on my clothes. Smoking has been banned in the UK from all enclosed public venues though people can still smoke outdoors. If someone wants to smoke in their own house or car, that's fine as long as they aren't harming anyone else.
