This is just a comment, take it or leave it. I think we've come to an incredibly sad place when with all our national debt we even have to discuss a liberal course. We need a hell of a strong dose of conservatism--that means not spending what we--not what we have, mind you, but what we borrowed. Honestly. Windmills are not going to save us at this point. You may not like Romney--I don't know why--but his record does show that he knows how to balance an account. Put aside your sneers long enough to save the country. Then you can go back to politics when we are not in imminent danger of watching our children becoming swiftly enslaved by oppressive nations. There has never been a better time to be a conservative--even if you're a liberal.
Smoking and Chess

Save it from what? The children being enslaved? You gotta' be kiddin' me. American children would make horrible slaves.
I hate it when I hear both of them fellers agreeing that the first job of a government is to protect the citizenry.
No, no. That ain't it.

Romney does know how to balance an account, his method was to put up some of his own money and leverage it by borrowing 100 times more from a bank, taking all this money and buying out a business and paying back himself and the bank by issuing junk bonds on the business he bought out. Of course due to all the debt the businesses failed and all of its employees lost their jobs but that was collateral damage. Using this same idea we could just pay off all our debts by having the federal reserve bank run its printing presses night and day. Or alternately we could sell our children into slavery. Can you imagine what would happen when some chinese woman says "hey johnny take out the garbage!" I'd love 2 c the expression on the woman's face when johnny tells her what she can do with the garbage!

I'm a fan.
I am a smoker, about almost a pack a day, though I mostly smoke beedis (tobacco wrapped inside flavored leaves of a specific kind, grown and sold in South Asia), and I would seriously hate to see my opponent smoking in front of me.
I regularly take IQ exams (was a member of Mensa so I had to), and the first thing to notice is the degraded level of intellect right after you get your smoke in.
While playing chess, the temptation, to pick a cig/cigar/beedi/pipe and light it, is very strong for the mere fact that the body is trying to cope with the acute stress and delicate situations that require immense focus.
It is our body's defense mechanism that makes us want to do something to calm our nerves down. Works really well with tobacco smoking!
However, while calming the nerves, tobacco has the immediate adverse effect on the speed at which we think or plan (In Chess, or Go, or IQ exams it is always the speed that counts).
In Chess, it will be too difficult for us to measure our capacity per game/move. However, in IQ exams, my personal level of speed and accuracy dropped by as much as 20% after I had smoked to my heart's content. Yet, when not smoked for a day or two and I take the exams, my accuracy would stay consistent at a very high level. Also, when I do not smoke, I also feel much more exhausted after each exam, than when I do.
It clearly shows that, in any given situation, my brain is able to make greater efforts when I have not smoked, and it stays more 'dormant' when I have - thus more exhausted after a better performance when I do not smoke.
So my friends, if you are serious about improving your performance in anything that involves analytical planning, such as chess, then you gotta quit it. And it is coming from a smoker of 10 years who cherishes his smokes - but no matter what I or anyone else says, we smokers are simply addicted. There is no charm.
Makes you wonder how scary Tal is if he never smoke, his results will be better..

I second that!

I usually vape when I play chess. I find that it helps me relax and actually take the time to think about my moves instead of rushing into things.

The GOP is the biggest budget buster in DC.
1. Two wars fought on borrowed money. Actual tax CUTS during a time of war.
2. Tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans which account for nearly all the yearly budget shortfalls up to the time this recent economic contraction began.
3. An insistence on the pat of the GOP to maintain cold war spending levels by developing weapons that the military doesn't want, and that we don't need.
4. Mr. Romney was a proponent of maintaing the Bush tax cuts until he flip flopped during the debates. Anyone who's serious about balancing the budget needs to consider the revenue side of the equation as well as spending cuts.
5. The programs Romney and Ryan advocate won't balance the budget, and they appear to be designed to be a massive transfer of wealth from the middle class to the super rich.

You're a moron. What bank would finance such a loan? NONE.
The businesses who came to Bain Capital for help were ALL FAILING. Of those Bain attempted to salvage, 80% survived while 20% ended up failing. Without the White Knight help (and if you don't know what that means, you really shouldn't be commenting on financial topics), 100% of them would have failed and closed.
Please confine your remarks to topics you understand, if any.
What banks would finance such a deal? The same ones that thought mortgage default swaps were a good idea? The ones who couldn't wait to scrap Glass Stiegel so they could get into businesses that are too risky for banks?

The LAST conservative to serve as President was President Eisnhower, and the rest of the gop downplayed his work altogether.
Pardon, but, people kept whining that the Democrats and Liberals were always pointing at Bush junior and blaming him is only part of the problem. The full extent of that problem is that our children's children's children will be paying back for his terrible policies and lies. AND also Reagan's terrible policies.
Romney would LOVE to win, because he would blame President Obama, and then blame bush junior and President Clinton, and then President Bush, and probably skip over Reagan because that clown has good press spinners.
But the goptp (and the tea party, too) have done nothing but be a stumbling block in front of everything President Obama has wanted. That was the plan from tyhe start. Blame Obama.
Meanwhile, mid term, the goptp (and the tea party, too_) all said "Vote me in, we'll get those jobs for you!" and they had ONE flop. The pipeline (the same as the one China ran from the North of their country to the busier areas of their nation...only it exploded. They are still cleaning it. The thought is it will take them up to ten years to fifnish cleaning it up, and even then, the land will NOT be usable for many things. Crops, to begin with.
So, Canada wanted to run their pipeline to our Gulf ports. Not to sell to us, specifically. But to sell internationally. Matters not. It wuld have been about 2000 people hired temporarily, and after construction, only about two hundred at the most would be needed to maintain the pipes (until they explode, that is. Then we get to see Tennessee coal ash spill all over again, only with petroleum.
But, no jobs of any import or permanence came from the goptp (and the tea party, too) and instead, now a steady drumming to put women in their place, end their rights altogether, make marijuana MORE illegal than it already is, continue letting corporations be "people", and continue the war at all costs.
There are NO positive points to the goptp (or the tea party) and I, for one (a Republican) will be giddy as the last flush washes the lot of them out to sea, where they need to be. Preferably in an area of the ocean where sharks are plentiful. And hungry.
But, if i might be so curious...why the political lies in the middle of an article about smoking?

I like your comments about Eisenhower. He was a much better president than he gets credit for being. I also like what you said about the tea party and obstructionism. You're the kind of Republican I respected before the whole party got pushed far to the corporatist right.

You're a moron. What bank would finance such a loan? NONE.
Ha! You gotta' forget logic when thinking about banking in the last decade.
Ever hear of ninja loans?

I don't put anything past the banks. Basically they gamble with our money and when they lose they get more money from government. Why did Obama gives billions of dollars to them? If he was on the side of the people why didn't he loan the money to people who owe mortgages, they in turn would have given the money to pay back the banks and an easy re- payment plan could have been worked out. Or better yet, why doesn't the government seize the banks putting an end to their games. How is chess, politics and smoking related? The politicians are in bed with the bankers who keep the people quiet by providing them with cheap drugs such as cigarettes and alcohol. This is their chess game!

@bp Remember the 100 year mortgages? Also, and I hope this isn't a sore subject, but what happened to Cabrera and Fielder?
@frank A buddy of mine at work and I had the same idea - give the stimulus to the people! There would have been no better way to fix the banks and get money flowing into cash registers. It was a bipartisan plan. He's a Republican.

Nobody ever mentions this but when someone is thrown out of his home due to inability to pay his mortgage, what happens to him? He becomes a ward of the state, he has to collect welfare and since welfare doesn't pay enough to live on he may turn to crime and wind up in jail. It costs a lot of money to keep someone in jail! At the risk of sounding stupid, who were Cabrera and Fielder?
Nah, let's go shootin' and tree huggin'.
