For me the most beautiful tactical aspect of chess is the smothered mate. The set up and execution contains all the elements required to weave the most intricate of mating nets. I have been wondering if anyone is solely credited for the design of this type of mate? I know you here Morphys name attached to this mate alot but was he the first to use it or was he just the first to use it on such a high level? Are there examples of the smothered mate being used before Morphy?

Hundreds of years before Morphy.

Cool.

So whoever the player was that played the technique as described in the text by Luis Ramirez, could be credited as the creator.

I still wonder where they got the inspiration.

The moves of knight, rook, pawn and king were old. Mating a king trapped in a corner by his own pieces with knight´s leap was possible even without a queen.
