any techniques that will help one get set up or closer to an advantage while the other thinks they have the upper hand with the scholars mate?

Really? If you know that the opponent is trying to set up scholars mate there's no way of anticipating and building a counter that will catch them off guard?

Actually, you can do this

But there isn't a really good counter to catch them off guard (but that's how much I know)

What does "scholar's mate is just overpowered" mean in your head?

There's no defense to the scholar's mate I don't know why people even play chess when it's so easy to win all the time with it.

Here is a game I played against Carlsen earlier this year in Norway Chess 2015
I hoped I've convinced at least some of you that this opening should be banned from chess tournaments.
