So much for the Stafford Gambit

People go on about it as if it's some kind of Holy Grail of openings, but it's total gash imho. I love it when opponents play it because it's pretty much a guaranteed win.

I nearly got Stafforded recently - it was my first time seeing it so I was unprepared. Just barely managed to scrape by with a win.

In old days, you might have to discuss those stuffs in clubs for hours.

However, this can solve those crappy opening within a few seconds.

You can never trick Stockfish in case you installed her properly.

I know it’s a weakened version of server-based Stockfish, but still it's pretty impressive.

It just shows how weak Stockfish can be with limited time and processing resources (comparatively to AlphaZero Chess, we would all still lose) in strategically complex openings. It looks at some moves it thinks are the best and goes from there. Classical A/B pruning.

Neural Network chess engines like Leela Chess Zero and AlphaZero look at every possible move and doesn't need much pruning! I've had several moments when I'm analyzing a position with Stockfish, I'm letting it run and I'm seeing that its not even considering a move that I'm interested in. Then when I play the move to test if I'm doing terrible or great, it turns out to be the new best move according to it.

I wouldn't be able to do that with AlphaZero or Leela Chess. Stockfish sometimes gets blinded due to the pruning heuristics it uses.

I remember when AlphaZero's victory against Stockfish 8 was first announced, I looked at some of the games and I was so impressed with how intuitive and powerful its playing style was to me compared to Stockfish 8. Now we have Stockfish 13, the best official version of Stockfish which defeated Leela in TCEC season 20.

Stockfish 13 vs AlphaZero Chess would be an interesting match. I hope it could happen in the future.

No more interesting.

Alpha Zero is just innovatory neural network in scientific research only.  It is very basic. Current Leela in TCEC surpassed Alpha Zero level since 2019 Q1. Alpha Zero doesnt have time management and so playing 1 min per move and also doesnt have support endgame Tablebase. Alpha Zero Authour Matthew Lai shared all Alpha Zero concept to Leela programmers. Leela is simply massively advanced Alpha Zero with 3.5 times bigger Neural Network,  faster in search and a lot of advanced features such as MLH.

Estimated performance of Alpha Zero  will be minimum of -150 elo behind Leela and -170 elo behind Stockfish.
