So what is the protocol for offering a draw

I've never really had to do that. I've suggested it in the chat, as I think I can perpetually make the same move over and over again.

Perhaps I should just do that so that after 5 sets of repeated moves it will auto draw?

I think five-fold repetition automatic draw has been implemented but for triple repetition of position, you have to claim.

Aha very good. This is just daily games though.

The process is essentially the same for Live. The main problem with Live is the speed of your opponent's move, where you might have a hard time hitting the draw button before that happens.

Even in daily games, repetition will yield a draw.  But there is also a button for that.  I usually combine an inter game message when offering a draw, but only on white.

i never offer a draw on black.  I ask my opponent if he would like to offer a draw.  It’s white’s domain to admit the game can’t be won.

Very interesting. I need a list of proper chess protocol!  It's so hard to decide if I can play my way out of this mess or just repeat the moves to make a draw.

As I will gain rating points probably ... that's not very good sports is it, to think just about the points. But I've played out the game many many times and can't get into a good or equal position without him making a large blunder. I think. *rushes off to board editor to twenty-fold check*

I never say anything. I usually offer if I can see that I’m going to get repetition and if they deny that I’ll claim on on 3x. If the position looks drawing I’ll offer and if they deny I’ll play it out unless they offer. I don’t think there is any correct protocol as long as you aren’t offering a draw every other move.

What kind of nonsense is that? You are offering a draw, or you're not.

B: White, would you like to offer a draw?

W: Yes, draw?

B: Nf3 *clock*

...

Repeated moves by you don't count. The position on the board needs to be repeated.

What is the protocol when playing OTB? So far I have just played chess online in my life.

If the board position is repeated three times you can claim a draw.

Yes, it would be the same moves by me, and him, 2 different checks over and over. But I am deciding to play it out at the moment lol

luckily the check is just waiting there to be used if i get into any worse trouble

Interesting. I sometimes ask my opponent to ask me to ask him whether he would like me to ask him to ask me about offering a draw.

But then, I'm usually white.

You offer a draw after you make your move, typically by saying something like "draw?" between releasing your piece and pressing the clock. In case of a language barrier, a draw offer can sometimes be gesticulated by a finger gesture (crossing index fingers in the air).

Draw offers has to be marked with an equal sign on the scoresheet. There is a custom that after the opponent rejects a draw offer, it becomes "their turn" to offer one if they change their mind.

To claim a draw by threefold repetition: you write down on your scoresheet the move that causes a repetition, but do not make it on the board. Then you stop the clock and call the arbiter.

To claim a draw by fifty move rule: stop the clock and call the arbiter. (Once all fifty moves have been played on the board for both players).
