Its not cheating.
If you move your pawn from row 2 to row 4. (making the first movment with it) And the opponent pawn is next to (like you had) then the opponent may take your pawn.

That is called en passant, not cheating
The move is called en passant. When you move your pawn two forward to escape a capture your opponent can chose to make a standard pawn capture, just like if you only moved the pawn one square forward, on the next move. I learned about En Passant in high school while I was playing my biology teacher, who was quite good at chess. I thought he was joking at first, and so I put my pawn back on the board and said "You can't do that." That is when he explained En Passant to me. It was a good lesson - I didn't make that mistake again :)
