I suppose it's relative (yes, pun absolutely intended). There are several uses for time, such as sleeping, eating, personal grooming, working and relaxing. If you wish to relax and enjoy chess, then not a waste of time. However, if you should be working, then certainly it is a waste of time. It's all relative . . . .

Oh, by the way, what should you be doing with your time right now?

---   Well I've been retired a number of years now and these days I try to concentrate on 3 very important questions from the time that I get up in the morning: a) when is the last time that I had a Pee; b) when is the last time that I had a Poop; c) where the heck is the nearest Bathroom ? Yup as one gets older it is a very good idea to concentrate on the important things in life.

---   Yup be sure to check on the location of the nearest bathroom, some things are very important ( even more important as you get older  lol ).

Einstein was a good friend of Lasker and they did play chess together at Berlin.

Einstein was right. Everything is a waste of time. The only question is whether it is a good waste of time for you. Einstein, of all people, knew that time must always waste away in accordance with the illusion:

"People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion." ~ Einstein

Only a lawyer or a merchant could say something like that.

I can't count how many times I've looked with disgust on the business of law and money grubbing as a wasted life. I thought my feelings were some kind of strange anomaly, until I read that book Shibumi, written in 1979 by Trevanian. Not that I'm so cultured of a person as the assassin Nicholai Hel, but the ethos of a chess player shouldn't be far from that of a real Go player - in my opinion.  It is basically the way of an artist who readily rates many things above financial concerns. Perhaps, impractical and painful at times, but we are entitled to our high folly.

---   Well okay we are here for a certain length of time ( 50 years, 75 years, or 100 years ? ). Some people go on to earn a Nobel Prize or perhaps a Oscar or some other prize and some people perform heart surgery as their occupation. Then again some people spend their working years driving a garbage truck. Btw if you do you think that picking up garbage is not important just wait until the sanitation workers go on strike  Rofl.
