He never really said that chess was a waste of time, from what I know. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)
He just disliked the competitive aspect of the game, and didn't see it as a thing to be so serious about (In the meaning of wasting your life studying it).
Anyway, my opinion is that chess can (and probably will) generate a positive income to one's life and everyone should give it a try. However, being obsessed with it is too much.
