Spassky on Fischer

One thing that always impressed about the fischer-spassky rivalry was the grace that spassky always showed towards fischer. Whenever fischer did something outrageous spassky would react with sympathy and understanding. Although spassky would disagree with many of the statements fischer would make, i never heard him be critical of fischer himself.

Indeed, in my household in 1972 we all sided with Spassky (because Fischer was such a jerk).

Spassky on Fischer:

"There is only one thing in chess that Fischer does without pleasure - to lose !"

"When you play Bobby, it is not a question if you win or lose. It is a question if you survive."

"I was the strongest from 1964 to 1970, but in 1971 Fischer was already stronger."

Boris Vasilievich told the truth. Nowadays almost everyone do the opposite.

Actually, it's a question if he shows up.

Seems kind of appropriate, now that I think about it.  He's in a state of permanent forfeiture.

When I met Spassky in 1986 he didn't consider Fischer the greatest player ever. I can't remember who was his number one....I would wager after the gift of the return match in 1992 which Boris made some decent money with, he at least bumped Fischer up a bit on his list...

My first chess book ever ( handed down to me from 4 previous owners Smile) was a book on Spassky and Fischer. I wish I could remember which one it was , I lost it along the way. Those guys will always be my chess heroes I think.

NM aww-rats: it must have been great to meet Spassky
