Is speed chess good for you? I sometimes wonder

well blitz is good for you, but most, and i wouldn't be surprised if it was all, coaches/teachers would say that bullet is very bad for you.

it is very good!

I sometimes wonder too.

It helps with the thought process sometimes, recognising openings and how to defend / attack against them.

The reverse of that is that it is SO possible to make an error, and theses are errors that one would not make in a 'Let's play' game.

There are advantages:

- Opening practice (you can quickly try out new lines and ideas)

- If played with a 5-second (or appropriate delay), you are training for crunch situations in actual OTB/Slow tournaments with the same delay.

- A good way to see how your tactical training is progressing. Getting better at tactics will lead to better blitz/speed chess performance.

- Very useful diagnostic information for a coach, if you happen to have one. He gets to see what your "instinctive" move choices are (because chances are, you'll play them!) so he gets a fairly nice idea of the really "bad" chess behaviors you're currently exhibiting.

well i feel its good if you do both. i mean, playing only speed chess of lets say 1 min, will make the player get used to play the best move with out any deep analisis. geting use to anilisng deeply and finding the BEST move is to me the funest part of chess, feeling as if you own the board.. but any way a 1 min game is raly fun to, i do it a lot. so a s i said playing both is good for geting better at chess, but not only playing fast chess by it self wich dosent give you time to play the best you can..
