About 3 years ago I was talking to a English GM about choosing openings, he said to me 'it all depends on what colour squares you like'. At the time I wasn't very impressed with this response as I wanted to know his in-depth opinions on a variation of the Grünfeld Defence or something - in true patzer style :)
I now look back and notice (now I understand Chess a bit more) I play much better with my pawns on/controlling certain colour squares without even realising it. Maybe this might be of some help to you in opening choices..
