This is well and good, but because I am progressing pretty quickly in tactics and not so much in other place, my timeline is nonstandard, and therefore I made a forum post for it.

I also learned nothing but tactics until my current rating. Now I understand my lack of knowledge in endgames and positional play which is a huge weakness. You should try to keep all of them in the same level.

Daeru is right , tactics without knowledge of endgames or middlegame will prove useless.Try not to neglect any of these 3 if you want to improve fast.

Tactics training is easy and fun .Tactics trainer , some puzzles and .........2200(or more) in just a few weeks.......  but  tactics trainer can't help you understand chess and chess  needs , most of all , understanding. The serious test of how willing you are to improve( and how much you really can improve) is the study of endgames and middlegame and not the tactics trainer.

i dont know if learning later in life means anything. playing and reading chess are the 2 best ways to learn. first learn basic strategy , then get more and more advanced reading material. one of the worst things beginners do is get too pre occupied over their plans , and dont pay attention to what their opponent is up to.

I think I do this. While if a tactical opportunity presents itself, I can definitely seize it, I never get said opportunities because I mess up in strategy/setting things up.

OK, so you want to get good at chess, well, let me tell you how. First ignore all transient, empty, egos.

Second: understand that the key to winning is giving your opponent more problems than he can solve in one move.

A while ago one asked of an opening formation he had come up with.It could have been called the Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad World attack because it was like an extended 'W'. But there are set-ups you can get into and play the middle game with hopes to score.  One is the Colle system; another is the Stonewall Attack and finally just setting up a e3-d4 pawn chain to develpe around.

Once you're developed and your known in the center, look for ways to turn that nice straight line of pawns into a desorgainzed mess.Be alert. When pawns are swapped have rooks ready to go. First one to get their rooks into play wins.
