Strategy games other than chess

Im getting a little tired of playing chess on my phone and computer, so what other strategy games would you recommend to me to play?
it doesn't matter if its a videogame like Pokemon or LoL, i just want to relax a little.

most video game "strategy" involves either luck, reflexes (rapid accurate clicking), or other such things that reduce the "strategy" part to be very low compared to chess.   Long term strategy / turn based are a little better but its a dead genre nearly and still has that annoying luck factor.  There are classic board games like chinese checkers, othello, etc.  Trading games are often strategic but tend to become tedious after you figure out what to do.

I dunno... I am a fan of my old long term stuff ... the bulk of games in the past decade have been garbage with only a few hours of play in them.  All graphics and noise with no meat.

One of the best I've come across is a boardgame named "Yinsh". Like chess, there is no random element: it's a game based purely on skill. There are several distinct playing styles used by elite players. Unlike chess, there is no real advantage to going first (or second). There is no real opening theory (and probably can't be), there are very few draws, and the games are faster: I don't think I've ever had a game last over an hour.

The downside is that nobody plays it.

The Chinese strategy game Go is said to be fascinating. A USCF master who I used to know stopped playing chess, claiming that Go is more challenging and interesting.

I haven't tried the game because chess is more than challenging enough for me. Besides, as Bramblyspam says about Yinsh, nobody else plays it.

I recommed Chinese chess or xiang qi. The pieces are similsr except no queens and extra pieces like cannon and kings bodyguard.

Alpha Centauri/ Alien Crossfire, by Sid Meiers.   It's a turn-based, strategy, video game, similar to Civilization and Risk, but it takes place on an alien planet and you compete against humans and aliens.  You have to own an old computer to run it though, since it was made back in 1999.

I also like Forge of Empires, which has turn-based, interactive battles on a grid, similar to chess.  There's also the addition of terrain bonuses and obstacles and the troops have strengths and weaknesses vs other types of troops.

There used to be an online game (I can't recall the name of it though), with an outer space theme, that was very much like chess on steroids.  They discontinued it though.

I believe that Go actually has a descent following and is much more popular than Yinsh.   I've heard of other chess players that also like Go.

I would probably try Chinese chess, if the pieces were figurines that looked like elephants, chariots, horses, cannons, soldiers, etc.  But they are just checkers with Chinese symbols printed on them.  Too confusing, since I don't read Chinese.

I believe in Hongkong and China you can buy board and pieces using figurines.

for sheer mindless relaxation there is  mahjong.  lots of free mahjong sites on the net.

pente is a good strategy game as well.

scrabble, under the name "lexulous" is free and good if you like to work with words.  it is free.

I used to play Pente.  My brother and I got pretty good at it.   I was also the Scrabble champion of my family.   My Mom had a better vocabulary, but I had much better board strategy, so I would win most of the time.   I never tried Mahjong.   Yet another Oriental game with symbols on the pieces.  :/

Chinese checkers is pretty fun.  I used to play that when I was a kid.

Apparently, you can buy them online too.   Although, I don't know anyone who plays, so I'd have to play an online version, which probably uses the disks with the symbols on them.

The figurine version does look pretty cool though.

Majiang involves luck and not purely strategical game. Electronic majiang is not even half the fun of otb majiang played by 4 persons.

Paradox makes a wide range of grand strategy computer games. They are one of the last companies alive in a dying genre.

Games of the Generals is a great alternative board games.
