Sucks at the game

I so badly want to play chess well, but I suck at it.  I've tried playing online and played about ten games, but hopelessly lost everything.  Ive worked through the videos and everything, but Im still just as bad.  Now Im too ashamed of playing against other people on chess.com because they will laugh their heads off at the stupid moves I make.  Im not stupid, have an iq of 140, but this chess thing gets me down.  Im not a quitter, and I really want to learn, but Im am just getting more and more confused.  Any advice?

90% of the chess players on this site sucks! So relax and just play.

urk
Virtually every single move you make is a mistake. You need to understand why those moves are not the best. You need to understand how to read and respond to threats.

If you do improve you'll find that chess becomes more fun as you get better at it. But there are other things to do in life.

Don't worry about losing games, and don't worry about making mistakes.

Anybody who beat you probably made a load of mistakes in the game too, they just managed to capitalise on some of yours before getting punished for their own.

Try to find one or two things that you are specifically weak at, and put effort into improving at them.

After making a lot of improves your ability at chess and your rating will have increased... but you'll still lose some games. Wink

Such is the lot of the chess player! Laughing

Sometimes you gotta get rekt to rekt.

Put your 'Want' in one hand and do something in the other. There are countless tools here on cc, use them and use that 140 IQ. How's your EQ? Poor I s'pose.

11 games under your belt since July. Me thinks something smells funny in here.

Read How To Reassess Your Chess by Jeremy Silman. Hands down the best book I've read.   I used it  to improve from being  totally useless to a reasonable player within....well it took a couple of years to be honest. I'm  not going to kid you that learning to play chess well is a fast process.

That's my main recommendation. Of course there are lots of other books on openings and endings that people can recommend.

TalSpin

Take it easy and don't expect yourself to play perfectly. Many players here would be happy to point out the mistakes you make, just post a game or two in the game analysis section of the forums. As already said, practice tactics. Pick up a beginner book on the game. The more you play and actively study, the more you will improve. It takes time, just lime anything else. Don't let it get you down. We all have to start somewhere.

I've had about 3 different user accounts here over the years and every single fucking post I've ever read by kaynight has been some short, nasty retort to someones post.

There's a wide spectrum of chess ability.  A player should never feel inferior or superior . Just enjoy it. Most 'laughter' is probably from players who may only be marginally stronger than yourself. if someone mocks or trash talks, then just block them .Most people are OK on this site.

Erm, kaynight is not always nasty. Sometimes kaynight is just aloof. No harm in keeping it simple, I say.

A rule I've learned on chess.com: No matter how bad you are at chess... there is always somebody worse than you.

Chess.com automatically gives new users a relatively high rating, which means when you first start out you'll be matched with people who are likely much better than you. (Or at least, that's what happened to me. meh.png)

However, if you play enough games, sooner or later you'll be matched with people whose chess ability is closer to your own. If you play long enough, eventually you'll start winning games.

Once you're at that point, you can start to improve your game. Sooner or later, you'll be able to take on the players you're losing to now!

Good luck! happy.png

I think you might wish to revise your use of pronouns after making a closer observation...

I hate loofs.

Wait... if Kayknight is dyslexic, does that make him a fool instead?
