Suggestion to Deal with Fair-Play Violators

Just an idea for Chess.com:

It would be cool if the Live Chess server would give you a pop-up window right before a game starts with someone who repeatedly violates Fair Play Policy. The window could read something like:

I think this is an effective way to discourage fair play violations (of course, they could still have their account suspended if they continue to violate, so I'm not saying to eliminate the current system, just add to it, because if my personal experience is anything like others', I regularly come across disconnectors, time wasters, cussers, etc. etc.).

This system would make it harder for repeat violators to get games because I think most people will just cancel and seek another game. They might have to wait five seeks or so before someone finally accepts a game, which is likely to annoy them, so I think many violators would probably start playing more sportsmanlike.

I'm not saying that people should have this happen to them on the first couple of offenses--we all have disconnection issues at times or aren't at our best once and a while--but if you get X offenses in X period of time, your opponents will see the aforementioned window for the next X games.  And of course Chess.com can make those values whatever they think is appropriate.

Anyway, just an idea. What do you guys think?

When I log in and play I get this warning and did click cancel and played. The site said halfway through the game that it had detected another log in and cut the game off-thats why I got the fair play warning-not through cheating but because of this "other log in"...I do play on my kindle as well as my pc and I think this may be why..I am going to leave chess.com because I have no idea how to stop this....but believe me..not all disconnectors are cheating...especially when its chess.com thats cutting you off all the time!!

I simply started blocking fair play violaters. It didn't do much at first but, after a month or so I did notice a lot less violaters. Nowadays, it happens less than once every 100+ games.

I'm tired of players making a mistake and disconnecting or letting time run out.

Check out the alert box--just edited the post to include an example.

Yeah I block too, and it probably does help, but I still get people frequently enough that it's annoying. :)

Surely simply finishing the game and then blocking , some for rude or foul mouth people.

They lose - firstly they have only had one game with you , a fair and reasonable player , and will not get another - and of course if this happens to them regularly it will end up being atwo sites - one for the reasonable and one for the unreasonable.

That's a great point, but the drawback to blocking is that it takes a long time for violators to get blocked by so many that it really affects them.  The suggested system would, theoretically, start to shape their behavior after just a handful of violations as opposed to months and months of people blocking them. Of course, your suggestion is beneficial, to some extent, to one player, but the above system would be beneficial to the larger Chess.com community, so I think it's an improvement

That is why. :)  Just close the app first on your Kindle and then log on. Plus, I don't think you get a Fair Play violation for that.

If you log on to another device during your game, you don't lose the game, you just start playing on the new device. Live chess handles this. And of course sometimes we all disconnect on accident due to poor internet--I noted that in my post.

Incidentally, I got yet another disconnector while writing my comments to this post lol...gotta love it.

Disconnection is rife, so unfair to punish players for that.

The fact that it is so common is precisely the reason that some better system is needed.

Time wasting is indeed against the fair play policy:

Chess.com encourages players to be kind and show good sportsmanship. Our Fair Play policy expects that players will not:

  • intentionally disconnect during games
  • stall to make opponents wait unnecessarily
  • frivolously abort games because they don't want to play black, etc."

yes,  in leiu of shackling them in the middle of town in wooden stocks and throwing rotten tomatoes at them, this is a fairly good idea.

I agree, a good idea.

If we all simply blocked the bad man they would be isolated exponentially.

I agree with kaynight

I had some violation notes the first 2 months playing blitz. It irritated me. My violation was aborting games, but It was not on purpose. Something hung, and I pushed a button once more, and whoops, the game was aborted.

Those incidents happened when starting a live game.

An opponent thought I was a cheater because of the warning text in the chat.

So, I am warning against to much warnings.

I agree, the Fair Play policy needs to be seriously rethought before chess.com puts any effort into increasing punitive measures.  We shouldn't be scolded for aborting games.

I would settle for a decent connection I lose most of the bullet games on time disconnections, or lag.

The screen will flicker on the square my clock starts and I have to wait to see or guess what will appear on that square.
