What is the first clue you may as well give in?

what about pawn positional strength?

Having no counter play ideas is my first clue. If you add in being down significant material there is a good chance I'll resign soon.

Yeah. I give up when I have no counterplay. I need to be losing both positionally and materially before I give in.

I don't give up when there's a mate threat. I have to make sure my opponent sees it first before I tip my king.

Resign when:

1) you are losing,

2) you can clearly see how you would win if the sides were reversed, and

3) you feel that there is nothing more you can learn by playing it out.

My opponent is pointing a gun at my face.

depends who Im playing,

when I play people around 800s I play on no matter what. They end up doing a mistake and stalemating me about half the times. Players around 1000 I give up sooner, but I tend to do a few extra moves, with an advantage in material its often they become careless and do some bad exchanges. And you also have the posibillity that they blunder and suddenly your to knights mean nothing compared to the queen you just took.

Never give up.  I've been in losing positions only to get back in the game with careful play.  Unfortunately, I have been on the other side, too.

Wait until it's clear you opponent sees how to win. I resigned a game once because I saw a mate in 3 or 4 I could not avoid - post-game my opponent said he was not even considering that line!

I've seen this several times..especially OTB.
