Tablebase question

Perhaps I do not undersand tablebases as much as I thought.  There is an article by Peter Silver where he is talking about the new 6 man syzygy tablebases and he shows this picture of the analysis pane.  If I understand the analysis correct the last line of analysis is scored as +-(3.88).

I thought that the whole idea of the table base was to perfectly play that position.  Wouldn't each position then be either a win loss or draw?  Which is the case with the 3-4-5 tablebases.

thank you,

John

The numbers you circled in red are the number of tablebase hits.

Houdini is evaluating a position and periodically checking the tablebases, to see if it can find a forced win.  It currenly gives White a big edge, 3.88, but hasn't yet found a forced win, loss, or draw.

Hi,

I understand that the circled number is tb hits but isn't it the whole idea of a tb to find the win loss or draw?   So when you say "hasn't yet" does that mean the table base or engine needs more time or is the position unclear and can still technically go either way?

Where can one get 6-men Syzygy table bases without getting a virus?

There are more than 6 pieces (including kings) on the board in your position...
